Is he trying to surpass Mr. Hockey?

Not gonna happen, Chris.

Not sentimental reasons. Leadership reasons. Every year, the Wings bring back older players that everybody else thinks is done. They do it because their development system focuses on older guys being a mentor.

Chelios mentored Fischer, and he'll probably mentor Meech or Quincy. Likewise, Lidstrom mentored Kronwall. Yzerman mentored Zetterberg. In almost all of these cases (actually, I think all of them) it's an obvious thing. They were moved next to each other in the locker room, and it was very much an intentional thing that these older guys go out of their way to show the younger guys the ropes.

So much is made of the vaunted Detroit Red Wings scouting, but not enough is made of their internal player development. This is something that is paying dividends for them, and it really helps build a team-first environment.

Someone will have to kill the man before he retires... Unbelievable.

And you can never have too many solid, low-cost NHL defensemen.

Chelios is slowly but surely falling out of the "solid" category of NHL defensemen. Nothing that made him effective even in his early-40s is still around. He doesn't have that quick 1-2 step jump anymore. He doesn't win a single physical battle anywhere on the ice. And going back to #1 since he isn't as quick to the puck as he was even just a couple years ago, he doesn't have as much time to move the puck where he wants to. Especially under pressure. At 42 or 43 you still could have said he played like a solid 30 year-old but now he most certainly looks his age.

If you factor in that a guy 15-20 years younger than him is going to be traded away because of this signing... you just can't excuse it at this point.

More likely Lilja than Lebda. Lebda is much better, or at least will be, in my opinion.

The sad thing is that at 46-47, he is still in better shape than 2/3 of the current NHL players

The Question now should be what will his ratio of ice time to Press box time be this coming season?

At least 3 to 1 or lower. He's being signed for the #8 spot.

Have to give Chelios some credit here, he's playing because he loves the game and not just the money, in a limited role he'll be good for that powerfull team. Have to give Holland some credit too as he knows Chelios is a leader.

Good job

I'll add that the Wings are a great team and are clearly thinking 4 rounds.... this playoffs. I saw Chelly in the 07 playoffs.. even if he is 50% of what he was 2 years ago by the time the 09 playoffs come around if 1 or 2 D-Man get injured Chelly is a playoff warrior. He is ridiculously smart and in the playoffs he is that much more valuable. Maybe you don't need him at all in the playoffs... maybe you get 1,2, 3 playoff injuries. Chelly can be a top PK D-Man and a 15-20 minute playoff D-Man if you need him. He is a cheap playoff depth insurance policy at 800K plus esentially a player coach.

Chelly was a fraction of his Chicago self as he nearly beat Lidstrom for the Norris at 39/40 years old. Now he is a fraction of that Chelly.. heck he may be a fraction of the Chelios he was in the 07 playoffs when he got the Wings a PP late in the game they got eliminated with his veteran saavy and a stick under his armpit to draw the penalty. Chelios is one of the top few D-Men EVER. It is like having a 47 year old Yzerman or Gretzky or Bourque.... Are they near their former skills? No not close... but heck if they still wanted to play... would you want them or an AHLer to fill a void in the freaking playoffs if you get injuries?

I'd sign him for a measly 800K easily. He certainly has yet to prove he is NOT worth that kind of money.

To me the Wings are the favourites right now for the Cup this season and resigning Chelios strengthens that and does not at all weaken it.

It's really admirable, him doing this at his age, as well as he does.

Good for him!, I have bad respect for this guy still playing, he shows that money isn't really much value to him but the passion of the game is.
