Both defensemen get severly underrated here, IMO.

Well you believe whatever you want to believe. Homer was in teh same situation as Fletcher was but he found the way to get the deal done. Not just one deal but multiple deals.

If only Toronto wasn't the centre of the hockey universe.

McCabe had said on a Rogers SN interview, if there was an offer he'd look it over. Fletcher didn't bring one to McCabe at trade deadline.

My thinking was he was set on trading Kubina (who'd bring more and is less useful to the Leafs) then last minute Kubina changed his mind, and he's flip flopped now to McCabe.

"Homer" did not have one single player who refused to waive his NTC. In fact, as far as I can recall, he moved only one player who had such a clause (Forsberg) and Forsberg was dying to get out of Philly and play for a true contender.

Comparing the two situations is ridiculous. Fletcher was facing a set of variables that would have been a problem for any GM. Even Sam Pollack and Bill Torrey couldn't have traded players who refused to waive their NTCs.

Is that right? Homer moved a player who played on one foot and who missed almost a half of the season, with NTC for best price available.

I guess your memory is too short.. Try to search for Forsberg trades and proposals.

With McCabe's roster bonus paid by the Leafs, they make out with about $400K in cap space. This was just getting rid of McCabe more than it was dumping his contract.

I'm guessing in the 6 million X 6 year range.

And before you laugh, remember, some tool gave Wade Redden 6.5 million a year...for the next 6 years.
Nevermind that, some team gave Jeff Finger a multi-year $3.5 million contract! Oh, wait...

McCabe didn't even have the worst contract out of the Leafs defense. I would say the contracts for Kubina and Finger are both more out of whack to their actual worth then McCabe.

Fletch mucks up the team some more. Its obvious his strategy is to make all the other teams better so we finish lower. I can't see any other possible reason for such an unbalanced trade.

I absolutely love this trade from a Flyers fan perspective. I think both teams actually got worse.

He's a useful player, he just needs to be played in the right role. For what Florida is paying him, he's a steal.

And, btw, McCabe is BETTER than everybody on the Leafs roster with the exception of Kaberle and maybe Kubina. He has certainly accomplished more than just about anybody you have left on that team.

oh, and one more thing. This is your recent evaluation of McCabe:

No more holding my breath whenever McCabe is on the ice. Doesn't matter where he is either. Offensive zone, neutral zone, defensive zone, the guy is a liability everywhere. I can't believe anyone was willing to take him at that cap hit for what he (doesn't) provide.

So, this same guy who is a liability everywhere is more valuable than a solid dman like Witt, or a good two-way forward like Hunter - neither of whom are even close to liabilities in any zone of the ice.

Hypocrite.

The funniest thing about this trade is many leaf fans said that Mccabes value is so high that they should get picks and not give them away.Looks like the Leafs paid to sell.

It still took a pick, ouch. Horrible contract Leafs fans, but feel good, it's gone forever now.

They added 0.8 million in payroll and upgraded from MVR to McCabe AND got a pick. Cap hit doesn't matter to Florida, they won't spend to the cap anyway. The terribleness of McCabe's deal came from the high dollar value at the time, but salaries have since increased to make the contract better now. The NMC was also the real killer to his trade value, but this doesn't affect his on ice value to the Panthers. The Richards contract was similar, salary progression made the cap hit less terrible.

Surely, if Ron Hainsey is worth $4.5m/yr, McCabe is worth a little bit more than that?

I guess every Toronto fan wants to look past the 57, 68, and 53 point seasons he put up for them and just b!@#$ about the blunders he might of made. Im glad to have him, and good luck with MVR. He will be lucky to put up half the points McCabe will put up this season with the Cats.

McCabe might be a defensive liability from time to time, but he will have either Bouwmeester or Allen as his partner, both who are extremely good in their own zone. Im not worried about his mistakes he might make if he comes here and gets us 40+ points.
