Maybe Atlanta will call him up for the powerplay?

(2nd unit probably)

What is it about this guy that he can't stick in the NHL? He is a PP points machine. Maybe he can't do much else.

Atlanta can't call him up unless they sign him.

He is terribly inconsistent, he had 24 points last season, and 15 of those were in the first 22 games. Later on in the season he had 7 points in 7 games. He played 58 games, so in 29 games he had 22 points, and in the other 29 he had two.

Because he started off good with Carolina, but then showed he's really not NHL material.

But they will get constant reports on how he is playing and can make him an offer if they like what they see/hear.

He can't do anything else really. He is a streaky points scorer and when he isn't scoring points he's useless.

Only because he lost all ability to play the point. Hossa burned him for a shortie and after that he just wasn't the same. No confidence at all and the points stopped coming. They tried to fix the issue but he just couldn't put up points anymore. Ask any canes fan. It was brutal. No powerplay points makes Jeff Hamilton useless because he can't do a hell of a lot of anything else.

I'll break this down more; he had 24 points, 9 goals and 15 assists. 7 of those goals and 9 of those assists came on the powerplay, for 16 total points, or 66% of his points.

After his last 5 months of the season in Carolina, I understand fully.

Um, no. Hamilton continued to be given PP time for literally months after he stopped scoring. Laviolette always wants a RH shot on the point and the Hurricanes' other options for that were Commodore and Walker (heh). Hamilton was still on the first unit when the Corvo trade was made.

PP TOI per game last season:

Cullen - 4:58
Whitney: 4:48
Hamilton: 4:43
Staal: 4:39
Corvo: 4:22
Cole: 4:08
Brind'amour: 4:04

He's not in the NHL because he's an absolute liability at even strength and is only useful on the powerplay because of his shot. Teams figure out his weaknesses very quickly and key on him to make mistakes with the puck, leading to tons of killed scoring chances and shorthanded opportunities against.

He went to Russia a year or so ago but he only played a few games and then came back so maybe he found it too hard to adapt.

This is true. It is very unfortunate, because it is hard not to root for the guy. Busted his butt working hard trying to make it to the NHL for 10+ years. Finally gets his chance when he is 29 years old. Big holes in his game defensively, so he'll probably only get a few more whiffs of NHL time in his career. Super nice guy too, and a great teammate.

Oh, he's also money in shootout, which nobody has mentioned.

I think you might be mixing him up with St. Pierre. I don't remember Hamilton going to Russia (but I could be wrong).

Hamilton had a stint with Ak-Bars in 05-06.

Better offensive skills maybe, but if you aren't going for a Buffalo-style setup a softie like Hamilton really doesn't deserve the spot over a big, fast grinder like Thorburn or Slater.
