If the Phils make the playoffs and Howard continues to be hot for the rest of the season, which should get his average between .255 and .260, I think he will get a lot of votes.

If they make it in (still a huge question mark IMO), I don't see who else it would be. Especially when you consider that Burrell is hitting like .210 post all-star break and Utley hasn't been setting the world on fire either, so it's not like Howard is getting a lot of protection.

CC Sabathia- oinly if Brewers make it

Albert Pujols- most likely to win if not Howard

Carlos Delgado- probally not, had a chance but is cold again

That's 6 in a row. Nice to see Happ pitch well and get his first win.

Nats just made it 9-7 in the bottom of the 9th. 2 outs, tying run at the plate, with the Mets bullpen desperately trying to hold on.

Those poor Brewers...

Bottom of the 9th, up 6-2, 2 outs and no one on base. 4 batters later, it's 6-6.

Even worse, they lost in extra innings.

Nice job by Hamels again, it's kind of funny, if he had gotten more run support, he could easily be sitting at 20-5 right now and be in the Cy Young discussion even though I think Lincecum deserves it more even if Hamels had 20 wins.

And went from bad to worse.

Just a horrible outing my Myers tonight. He looked like the pre-minor league stint Myers who was afraid to throw his fastball. He didn't mix in virtually any fastballs tonight and the Marlins hitters were just teeing off on the off-speed stuff.

Myers was due. Even though it's mid-September, the Phillies wouldn't be where they're at without his second-half performance.

No doubt that the Phils wouldn't be in this position without Myers' performance after the minor league stint. That said the pitch selection and his unwillingness to throw the fastball last night concerned me a little bit.

He had no life on the fastball. The one he was slopping up there last night would have been smashed around by the Marlins at least as hard as what he got last night, if not more.

I'm not watching, so maybe someone can enlighten me... why was Blanton taken out after 5? Was it his pitch count? An injury? Because it looked like he had his good stuff today (9 Ks) and only gave up runs in one inning.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see he was lifted for a PH with the bases loaded.

He was also up to 96 pitches. (I think it was 96, or at least close to it.)

ALthough he will not win it, Brad Lidge should be in for CY Young.

Actully I read an article, not by a philly writer, why Lidge should be the MVP. he said w/o him we would be out of it. And he saaid that if the brewers or mets had him, they would be easily in. the guy made some good points. But he concluded by saying it will be between Howard and Pujols

This thread has been pretty dead lately. Anyway, the Phils got another huge win today and are now a game and a half a head of the Mets for the division lead. Everything seems to be coming together right at the right time.

I am getting giddy at the thought of playoff baseball, but I cannot look to far ahead just yet.

I have luxury box tix for tomorrow given to me for my birthday. CANNOT wait.

Lidge is worth every cent.

and the Mets bullpen blew another one.
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/..._bullpens.html
Quote:
Shea Stadium is home of the Reek Squad. The Mets' bullpen blew its 29th save yesterday. If the trend keeps up next year, the team will sell Maalox at the concession stands at new Citi Field.
Quote:
The Phils' bullpen has been one of the best in the NL all season. In the NL, only the Dodgers (3.26) have a better bullpen ERA than the Phillies (3.28). As a team, the Phils have just 15 blown saves. In the majors, only the Yankees and Blue Jays have fewer. In the last nine wins, the Phillies' bullpen ERA is 1.48.
