Assistant Captains in 3 Years?

Ok, this one's a little bit out there, but who do you think will be wearing the As for the Stars after the old guard retires? Old man Morrow is going to need some help, you know. Will it fall to our big money centers? Perhaps our young blueliners? Sean Avery?!

Modano, Zubov, Lehtinen and Barnes were assistants at one time or another last year... I believe that's the full count.

Richards is a possibility

Robidas, but he is in a similar age group to that of Mo, Zubie, lehts, etc

Fistric, seems to always rise in to some form of leadership at every level so I think he has a big possibilty of doing it in Dallas eventually.

Grossman, solid stay at home defensemen tend to be captains. he is in the mold of Norstrom so it may be a large possibility

Lundqvist could end up being the Barnes type of role player in the future.

this is a pretty tough question. who really knows, eh?

Wow, we must be really incredibly desperate for hockey when we start this topic.

Richards
Ott
Fristic
Robidas
Nisky, or Grossman
I think the Stars will sign a big name or trade for one once Mo, Zubov and lehts are gone. Whether it be a forward or D so who knows who could be A's then

You mean you aren't?

Richards is the most likely candidate. Ribeiro might be as well.

Personally I can't see Nisky getting it. Maybe it's just that he's so young. I dunno. Could def. see Fistric being one.

One name I had in mind that I haven't seen yet is Daley.

Neal is an interesting wild card. In fact if you were handicapping the next captain of the Stars, Neal might be the most likely candidate, strange as that sounds.

Jay Bouwmeester will be the next captain of the Stars.

DON'T TEASE ME

Everything I read about James Neal screams captain, but let's not appoint him leader of the big team until he at least catches on with the big team full time. A bit like calling a 19 year old whom Bill Belicheck has never heard of 'the next Tom Brady'. Let's just tap the brakes a bit.

Young, talented and tenured seem to be a high-chances combo, so Daley and Richards sound like a pretty good bet.

Richards and Morrow are the same age (I think Richards may be a year younger). The only way I see that happening is if Morrow leaves the Stars before he retires. If Morrow finishes his career as a Star, and Richards for that matter, I would think the Stars would want to pick someone in their late 20's like they did with Morrow. That would make Niskanen, Neal, Sawada, or any of those guys that are just breaking into the league a legitimate shot. Guys like Ott and Daley could also get consideration, but they would also be on the last leg of their career at that point.

Agreed.

I could see Nisky getting the A or Grossman.

Neal will no doubt be in the fight for the C later in his career if he's kept here.

I asked Heika about this in his little Blog's live chat, here's what he thought about it:

Quote:
Wow, good one. If Brad Richards sticks around for more than the three years he has remaining, I can see him getting one. I think Stephane Robidas deserves one, and I think you could also see someone like Steve Ott in the mix.

I heard this somewhere but apparently Ott is loved by the guys in the room. He speaks his mind and gets the guys going. He is a good guy to have as a leader off the ice from all I have read about him.

So I would consider him for the assistant captaincy down the road for sure.

Out of curiosity, why would you argue against Robidas? What has Robidas done or not done that would lead you to believe he couldn't be a leader within the locker room and get acknowledged for that roll with wearing a letter on his jersey?

1) I don't think he'll be here in 2 years.

2) One good playoff run from a guy that's been invisible up to this point in his career doesn't warrant an A IMO.

3) I think we'll have better leaders than him by then.

In response:

1. That may be, and if that's the case he certainly wouldn't be up for consideration.

2. Leadership and skills are not the same. A team's top player is not always the best captain, or assistant in this case. Look at Modano when he had the captaincy.

3. Maybe, but I'm willing to give the team the benefit of the doubt to pick whom to reward and who are the leaders within the room.

Personally, I would have been against Robidas because of his nose. Well, at least pre-surgery. How could he have possibly argued his case with the refs while his nose was concave?

That has to be the most entertaining reason for not giving someone the A I have ever heard! Obviously moot point now...

1) I think he'll definitely be here in 2 years. Zubov and Boucher won't be and we'll need a veteran who can help stabilize the back-end.

2) Invisible? You mean like the way Lehtinen is invisible nearly every night when he plays. Or how Barnes was invisible and never racked up points. Just because a player isn't flashy, or even overly skilled doesn't mean they aren't worthy of an "A". The way he has been playing lately, Modano doesn't deserve an "A", yet he gets one simply because he is Modano.

3) I hope we have more leaders in a few years, but Robidas is one of the hardest working players we've had in a long time. He takes some of the worst looking hits to make plays and then jumps right back up and keeps going. Hard work and perseverance are two of the most important attributes to great players and although Robidas will never sniff the HOF...he definitely embodies those qualities which is why I don't think he should be disregarded as a possible "A" candidate.
