GCI:THN Goalie Confidence Index- Price/Halak #1

Picked up THN Sept.16, 08 mag today. THN writers asked themselves a simple question; can teams really trust their goaltenders when they are needed?

THN devised a series of 7 criteria based on data from the 2007-08 season by which the 60 starters/back-ups 'for this season' were rated as to how dependable they were, *and will be, to their teams. They call this the Goalie Confidence Index.

The Criteria-

1) Save percentage.
2) Goals-against average.
3) Save percentage on the penalty-kill.
4) Percentage of games in which the goalie was pulled.
5) Percentage of games in which the goaltenders gave up 5 or more goals.
6) Winning percentage.
7) Shutout percentage.

*Each duo's combined score was weighted on how often each tender is expected to play this year, and this is how THN came up with this years ranking.

Based on the criteria Montreal finished at #1 ranking, followed by SJ, Det, Ana, NJ.

Wouldn't this be for Price + Huet?

No. This is a projection for this season, based on last season's data. Hence, Price/Halak. These dudes did quite well last season. I edited the original post to reflect your fair question.

I guess they didn't include the playoffs.

I reckon.

To be fair to THN, they are projecting the starter/back-up number of games they figure each tandem will play this year in the mix. Given the above criteria, Price and Halak are expected to do quite well. I hope so.

They should both do well. If one great goalie does falter then we still have a great goalie to pick up the slack.

BTW- Jaroslav Halak played in only 4 games last season. However, he led the league in the overall score. This combined with Carey Price's stellar winning percentage, and only being pulled 5% of the time in his rookie season put the tandem over the top.

I've thought for a while that Jaro Halak will be another Vokoun for us, only this time we'll actually hang on to him. I just hope we get something of substance back for him when he eventually does depart. I imagine that will be sometime in the next 18 months.

Then again, I've been wrong before. About Andrei Kostitsyn in particular.

Interesting information. I also very confident in this duo and always wonder why some fans talk/want to trade Halak.
