And according to my be-a-pro mode Moose squad Grabner is the captain of Manitoba.

Yes grabner.

Honestly, I don't think the Canucks will name a captain at this point and may go with a rotation like Buffalo and Minnesota have done. Either that or Willie Mitchell.

Not an unreasonable selection on the game's part.

So what's the new caption? I haven't seen it yet, but my best guess is something like this:

"Introducing Vancouver's new one-eyed pirate Swedish captain, Matthias Ohlund. In other news, "The Pauser" is found quietly weeping in front of his computer."

That alone would make Ohlund a good choice.

I thought it would be nice if Mitchell can be our next captain.

I think as we've seen that system doesn't win cups...

One a serious note re: captain of Canucks...

Ohlund would be a terrible choice THIS year if we can't get him signed to an extension. He is going into UFA and could, in all liklihood be gone this summer. At this point I would rather have Mitchell as captian with Kesler and Ohlund as co-captains. Heck, if Gillis and Co. want to throw a bone to the Sedins...make one of them (Henrik?) co-captain instead of Ohlund.

This, by the way, is not a reflection of what I believe Ohlund is or is not capable of as a leader. I just think giving the captaincy to a guy who, at this point, could be gone in a year is pointless.

Mitchell as proven he will stand up to coach Vinny and has always been a great dressing room guy (or so people say). He's my pick for this year.

Not sure where you got this idea. Mitchell himself stated that it would be an honour but fans overplay how important the captaincy is to a team. This was in response to Sundin possibly being given the captaincy.

I thought teams only succeeded if they had a great captain? What does Mitchell know.

There was a story a few weeks back on how management and coaching staff had asked Mitchell to really set an example coming into camp. As a result he was in town training with the guys earlier than he ever had done before and even in these informal skates was making sure he was the first guy on and last guy off type of thing.

Mitchell is going to get thrown to the wolves soon... once the Canucks go in their first or second real slump of the season everyone will be begging for a captain with some offense.

Though he is Canadian so that may buy him some time.

How long is the passive aggressive sniping at people who don't like Naslund going to last, really?

A good captain helps a team. Mitchell is right to an extent that it is overplayed; but don't tell me a team isn't inspired by say, Steve Yzerman playing on one leg in the 2002 playoffs, Mark Messier guranteeing a win and scoring a hat-trick to do so in the 1994 playoffs...great captains deliver on and off the ice. To put it in Canuck terms, say, Willie Mitchell bleeding from the mouth, limping, staying on the ice, blocking shots and clearing the zone. Leading by example right there. I wouldn't be opposed to him, nor would I be particularly opposed to Ohlund, provided he actually wants/accepts the C.

Ohlund sounds like a solid option for a captain to me. He has been with the organization for the longest within the roster and has been consistently good with his play. He deserves it.

Ill disagree with this, as the city of Vancouver has accepted the fact that Mitchell will not be a major offensive contributor. So long as receiving the captaincy (assuming he will) does not distract him from his amazing defensive game, I doubt Mitchell becomes the scapegoat this year. If he isn't as vocal as people expect him to be, his defensive determination and physical presence should be considered leading by example.

However, (playing DA for a moment) if he does falter in his play, I would expect the fact he is BC grown to buy him more time than Canadian citizenship, especially to our media.
