The better hockey nation, Finland vs Sweden

Okay, I want to see what people thinks of these ice hockey countries which are one of the world's best, or the best. I think that Finland is better though Sweden has achieved much more than Finland. But year 2006 was lucky year for swedes. All ice hockey specialists said that Finland was best ice hockey country in that year, but still Swedes was first and Finland third(?). Well, anyway most of medals what Sweden has are before 90's. But let's take a look what finnish and swedish team looks like now and in future.

Finnish lines, nowadays.

Teemu Selänne, Saku Koivu, Jere Lehtinen
Tomi Kallio, Olli Jokinen, Tuomo Ruutu
Jukka Hentunen, Mikko Koivu, Valtteri Filppula
Jussi Jokinen, Ville Peltonen, Jarkko Ruutu

Teppo Numminen, Kimmo Timonen
Toni Lydman, Sami Salo

Miikka Kiprusoff, Kari Lehtonen,
Vesa Toskala, Antero Niittymäki,
Niklas Bäkström.

Swedish lines, nowadays.

Henrik Zetterberg, H. Sedin, D. Sedin
Jörgen Jönsson, Mats Sundin, Daniel Alfredsson
Johan Franzen, Nicklas Bäckström, Tomas Holmström
Mikael Samuelsson, ---, ---

Nicklas Lidström, Niklas Kronwall

Henrik Lundqvist, Mikael Tellqvist

Even through my Finn-goggles I see it's Sweden. No matter what you use as a yardstick, be it history, achievements of NHL stars, national league, international success, prospects, Sweden's a step ahead of Finland.

The question should be which is better, Sweden or Canada?

Looking at achievements, prospects and players i honestly think Sweden is a better hockey nation. Obviously Finland has an edge on goaltenders, unfortunately you can only use one per game .

Sweden, by a landslide.

As much as I hate to say it, but Finland is only ahead in goaltenders.

Sweden. More depth in offensive players, and they have Lidström.

But if Lundqvist gets a career-ending injury... They are in the crapper for a couple of years until Enroth etc. are ready.

I can't understand why swedish people still prefer that subpar-football league of theirs...

But at least no swede will top 50 goals in one season in the NHL a nice consolation prize that we have 7 seasons of that already.

Selänne and Kurri.

Sweden has better talent, but Finland is second only to Canada amongst my favourite hockey nations. Alot of heart on that team.

just look at the nhl drafts. the draft for 2008 contain 7fins and 17 swedes. (4 swedes in the top30 overall while the first fin is at 61). Year 2007 finland had 4players while sweden had 17.

nhl drafts from the last 5 years:
finland: 47 players
sweden: 82 players

2008 - 7fin 17swe
2007 - 4fin 17swe
2006 - 13fin 17swe
2005 - 9fin 12swe
2004 - 14fin 19swe

"But year 2006 was lucky year for swedes. All ice hockey specialists said that Finland was best ice hockey country in that year,"

so finland was actually better 2006 eventho sweden won both the olympics and the world championship? in the olympics sweden beat finland 3-2 and in the world championship finland lost to cze 3-1 whom sweden later defeated 4-0 (in the finals). what are you whining about? the results are pretty clear. are you also saying that pittsburgh (or any other team) was the better team 2007 and detroit red wings were just lucky?

also.. did you see swedens lineup in the olympics? it was the best tre kronor lineup since late 90s

Peter Forsberg
Mats Sundin
Daniel Alfredsson
Nicklas Lidström
Niklas Kronwall
Henrik Zetterberg
Daniel Sedin
Henrik Sedin
Johan Franzen
Mattias Öhlund
Kenny Jönsson
Tomas Holmström
P.J. Axelsson
Samuel Påhlsson
Mikael Samuelsson
Henrik Lundqvist

i just hate when people come with excuses and whine after a loss

Always thought that Russia vs Sweden was very interesting. Canada always looks good on paper, but is beatable.

i interpreted the question wrong. by hockey nation i thought you were talking about who the more rabid fans are. i chose finland in that sense. sweden is the better performing team though.

Lidstrom is what makes my decision. There hasn't been a player of his calibur coming from Finland.

And if you take overall achievements and overall players then Sweden still wins.. not to take anything away from Finland. They still produce great players too.

Definatly worth a because sweden played absolutely great hockey before the final

And Finland wasn't a winning machine playing some wicked hockey

yes it was worth a . since when do you not have to play great hockey to get to an olympic final?. they had 1-2 meltdowns on the road (lost to slovakia) but it was unimportant games and when it's all said and done they were the winners of the tournament and the better team. who cares if finland were a "winning machine playing some wicked hockey"? it's like when detroit won the pres trophy and were dominating in the regular season then got a first round exit by the oilers. who cares how good they were in the regular season? when it mattered the most they lost. sweden were there to win the gold and they did just that. that's why sweden > finland.

and when they 2months later went on to win the WHC gold with a almost entire new team they pretty much secured the #1 ranking that year. so it's laughable to say that 2006 only was a lucky year for the swedes and that finland was the truly better team that year.

but hey - #2 in the olympics and #3 in the WHC on the same year isnt too shabby

Voted Finland, then I remembered Forsberg and Sundin, I guess that would tilt my vote back to Sweden.
