They needed to get under the cap... this does it. I'd guarantee that this was the best offer on the table for Lang ($4 mil. contract that expires at the end of this year).
Obviously, Tallon didn't get a fair deal, but you knew he wouldn't.
All in all, not too bad, but you're right HF84, somebody will need to step up. It's a good thing that our pipeline is filled with solid players chomping at the bit to get a chance to show what they can do.

This was a FANTASTIC trade for the Hawks, far far more than I thought they'd be able to get while shedding salary.

And this gives a top six forward spot to one of the many younger players who are ready for it.

Go Bolland!

I'm thinking Toews is going to have a huge year now that he's the clear #1 centerman in Chicago.

Don't you guys still need to clear more space in order to be able to bring Barker up?

I dont like the return we got for Lang but the bright side is it does open up a spot for Kontiola and it puts us under the cap. I think the Hawks should go after Jeff Hamilton now that they have a little room. They could sign him to a 2-way contract and he fits the Hawks plans to a T.

Khabby, Barker or Lang had to go and the Hawks made the right choice but a 2nd round pick in 10 sucks for a 50-60 point producer who is a viable #2 center on almost any team in the NHL. I would have figured we would have gotten a prospect along in the deal.

I guess Kontiola will fill Lang's role.

From what I'd gathered- it was better than the Wings' fans said we would. But I'm sure people that were actually able to see games as opposed to sitting in on the odd radio simulcast can answer that one better.

Seriously, Jeff Hamilton is bad. There is a reason he isn't in the NHL anymore.

He's a very good hockey player with great skill.
He doesn't use his size as well as he could (but he never has, so I guess you can't expect him to).
He seems to take some nights off which is disappointing. He can turn it up big time the next game though.
He positions himself very well and always seems to find the holes

Makes room to play Sharp at C. He looked very good there at the Worlds. Besides, Hawks have lots of wingers.

2nd rnd pick for an aging player on last yr of contract at $4M is a very good deal IMO. Especially if Leafs suck, thats almost a 1st rounder.

Which wingers did Lang play with the most last year? Sharp? Havlat when healthy? Ruutu/Ladd?

Lines?

Anyone else think this moves Sharp back to center? Who would take over 1st line LW duties then?

No, Sharp stays at wing. It looks like Kontiola and Bolland will be the #2/#3 centers, for better or worse. If it's Kontiola, I expect Sharpie and/or Kane will be playing with him to give him some weapons.

Where does that put Ladd then? In all the depth charts I've seen so far, he's been put anywhere from 1st to 4th line LW.

Most see Ladd on the 3rd line LW, and I agree, but he still has some upside to him, so him up on the 2nd line wouldn't surprise me. It depends on who else makes the team and how well they play.

Agreed. This is how I see the forward lines at the moment:

Byfuglien Toews Havlat
Sharp Kontiola Kane
Ladd Bolland xxxx
Eager Burish Adams

I expect Kevyn Adams to be re-signed shortly, which would push Eager (or another fourth liner) to the press box.

With Lang, this team looked best rolling three balanced lines but without him, two scoring lines and a grind line looks like it may be the way to go.

I like the idea of Kontiola between Kane and Sharp, it should take some of the massive pressure off of him having the team's leading goal scorer and assist man next to him. Not to mention that the top line is equally, if not more, dangerous and incredibly well balanced.

This should keep our best players on the ice for the maximum amount of time. The third line should see slightly decreased ice time but the two guys on there now are very reliable and have quite a bit of offensive upside. I would like to fill the spot with an extreme physical presence so I'm liking either Bickell or Beach for the job at the moment.

If Makarov steps up big and has a huge camp, I could see Buff moving down to that third line slot.

Of course, all of this can and will change at training camp and throughout the year as injuries take their toll.

ETA: Holy crap, I just looked at the training camp lines, dead on to the bolded scenario.

He always played with Havlat when he was healthy. When Toews went down he played with Kane a bit and he played with Williams when he was healthy but Lang never really had any fixed wingers.

Sharp had such chemistry with Toews and Kane last year I don't think there is any way that they don't play together at the start of the season.
If that chemistry is somehow lost, then you may see someone else step in
