Never heard him in his prime, so to me he's just a quack who makes me laugh my ass off with his retarded comments.
Hughson is awesome. His details on players as he's commenting on them are original and great to hear. He's got a good voice to listen to as well and he's just so much more knowledgeable and thorough. He talks about actual things instead of Bob Cole wondering who's getting the penalty when Toronto goes offside
The title is misleading, since Bob Cole will still be around, he just won't be the first choice play-by-play man for CBC. That means that Hughson/Simpson will cover the main game (which despite what CBC says still looks like the last place Leafs). Lee and Crawford will cover the Western game. That probably means that if the Habs are playing some generic team (not the Leafs or the Sens or even the Bruins) on a Saturday night, we will still hear Cole and Millen. Or it could be flipped, where if the Habs are playing the Sens/Bruins/Pens/Western Canadian team, we would have Hughson/Simpson, while the Leafs would get Cole.
Jim Hughson is Dry and Boring...what is there to rejoice? Chris Cuthbert was to be the man but those at cbc don't know squat!
Hughson is the man. He has a great voice and adds alot of excitement to the play by play. Cole has sadly become confused and lost on his commentary and really needed to retire.

Excitement? Hughson damn near puts me to sleep
And who can put up with 'Hard around' or 'along the wall' ?

same here . It is a end of an era.Sorrta like Prices Right without Bob Barker but time passes on all of us .
We lose the opening theme song , now Cole the voice of hockey night in canada is being pushed off to the side as he moves up in age.
Everyone wants to jump on his every mistake at 75 years old seems unfair but we all eventually have to call it a day, we cant roll on forever. He was a great hockey voice for so many years and thanks for the memories Bob you had a great run .
I wish him all the best and will still see him the odd Saturday .

Well said, now it'll seem I'll be playing EA sports hockey game
Im 29 and remember some awesome calls from Bob Cole - I still like him - even with his gaffs and homerism - I've watch a ton of Van games being over here in Victoria, and as I don't mind Jim Hughson at all, I gotta say that IMO, Chris Cuthburt owns all.
He can get annoying but Cole has some of the lines that I always remember.
"and now a 24th stanley cup banner, will hang, from the rafters, of the famous forum, in montreal, the canadiens win the stanley cup"
"Desjardins ready, Schneider ready, Desjardins, no shot, on the outside, Desjardins shot SCOREEEEEEEEEEEEE.......THEY HAVE TIED IT!!"
"Desjardins following the play and he missed on the short side, here is again, scoress, DES JAR DINS and the canadiens win in overtime, his 3rd goal of the game, and the series is a brand new one"
"Kovalev, fires, SCORES, Kovalev has won the game, on that bullet shot, and the canadiens are up two nothing in the best of seven"
"rebouuuund, scores, KOSTOP O LOS, 48 seconds, Montreal miraculous victory tonight, in game 1, tied it late, end it early"

I'm sorry, but Bob Cole now a days is sleeping when he's broadcasting. I think you're thinking of the Bob Cole of old but sadly he's a shadow of his former self. At least Hughson is lucid and has a great voice, ask EA Sports.
Hey gang it's your old pal Moon Man. Not only is this story a bit long in the tooth (much like the pbp man himself) but the title is incorrect. Bob will still be around, he's just not #1 on the depth chart anymore.

Just a guess, but I predict Bob will call most of the Leaf games this season. I suspect he will be on a reduced schedule though. If I were Bob and if this was a one-sided decision to push him out the door I would sign on with CTV and follow the HNIC theme song. He might be rejuvinated for a couple of more years in a new environment and having something resembling a heart-beating human to be his colour man.
Is the CBC hockey schedule out yet? Have they decided on an opening theme?
