Jason Smith for prospects?

Would the Oilers make a trade like

Jason Smith to Buffalo for

one from group A and one from group B and one from group C

A) Mike Ryan, Chris Thorburn, Jiri Novotny, Norm Milley

B) Doug Janik, Nathan Paetsch

c) Brian Campbell, Andy Delmore

Novotny, Paetsch and Delmore would get it done for me, although you'd probably have to take another player along with Smith to make room on the Oilers roster. Someone like Cross or Ferguson, or perhaps even Jani Rita - if he has fallen out of favor as much as he seems to...

How about Smith to Montreal for

1: Ron Hainsey and a 2nd
2: Harcel Hossa and Francois Beauchemin

IMO The Sabres would have to give more than that .

That would be too good to be true. You would at least have to add Pominville or Klepis to Group A or replace A and B entirely with a goalie category.

Since when did Smith's value dive off a cliff?

I'm sitting here wondering the same thing! Defensive, hard-hitting D-Man are the hot commodity at the deadline this year as teams make a playoff push. Those deals will get outbid I think.

You never know. Lowe couldn't deliver on his "get help now" promise when trading Comrie. While the Oilers should get a roster player at least in return for Smith, Lowe just might go for prospects and picks again.

I think the oil would consider a deal like this though

Smith and 3rd for Hainsey and Hossa

He will only trade smith is he doesn't have a good chance at teh post season, so getting prospects back wouldn't be to bad if they were good prospects.

Completely different situations IMO.. Comrie was not going to play for the Oilers and thus Lowe was forced to deal him or watch him rot. Smith is a RFA at the end of the season and it sounds like Lowe is going to put quite a bit of effort into signing him to an extension. I doubt Lowe will deal Smith for prospects unless the Oilers are hopelessly out of the playoffs come the deadline and he has been unable to make any ground with Gator..

The Oilers won't deal Smith this year if they are still in it at the trade deadline. If the Oilers stink it up over the next few games, I could see him traded for picks/prospects, and if not, then during the summer. I think the Oilers feel that they have depth on defense for next year with Staois/Brewer/Semenov/Cross/Ulanov/Greene/Lynch/Woywitka/Bergeron. I still think Lowe has a team in mind for about two-three years from now, so I think prospects/picks still fit into the plan.

I'd LOVE to see Jason Smith in an Islanders jersey, who would it take from the Isles for him?

Edmonton gets:

Some toughness in return for losing Smith. White will never be Smith, but he could settle into a stable defense-first role as a 4th defenseman with a great partner. He's still reasonably young and could be signed to a long term deal in Edmonton. White could represent another Staois-type with a little more nastiness. Ahonen gives Edmonton a goalie that could share duties with Conks next season. He's NHL ready and Lowe could give more starts to the keeper who plays better. He likely will not be a bust and could have an even more pleasant upside than even his fans think.

Jersey gets:

Of course, Smith is the reason they make this deal. A leader, a top-three defense-first vetern. The kind of guy any serious contender needs for their run. He CAN provide exactly what Stevens would in he weren't injured and is a RESTRICTED free agent next year. Smith could sign again with Jersey to play with all the studs in their back end. Rita needs a team to give him a real shot. He can grind and play under Burns system. Will likely turn out to be an above average third-liner with the ability to pot 20. The pick would be what flatters Lou enough to make this deal.

Smith for Biron?????????

Hellz No.

Goalies are a dime a dozen in the league these days, while Jason Smith's are at a premium. IMO it would take Noronen and a top level prospect to get a deal done.
