Evgeny Grachev Inked

Quote:
Big Evgeny Grachev, the Rangers' third pick (No. 75) in the June draft, has been inked...Needs some work on his skating, but he could be a gem
http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/hockey/rangers/blog/

He is going to be a great player for us in the future.

This was probably to prevent him from going back to Russia. Good news.

If he goes back to Brampton, he still counts against our 50 contract limit, correct? If so, methinks that some marginal Hartford players (not sure who) are sure to have their contracts terminated.

i thin he goes back to the OHL this season to make sure he gets enough playing time.....its more just to make sure he realizes the rangers want him around for a long time

Thats a big boy right there, yeah he needs some fine tuning with his skating.

A lot of raw ability and size there. Good for him and the Rangers.

yes.....he is a big kid and he plays physical in the corners...needs to work on his skating(speed, quickness) but he is already pretty fast for his size

Incorrect, meaning his contract will not count against the 50? So that means MDZ's and Weise's contracts will not count as well?

Contrary to what I usually believe is the right thing for European players, coming over early might be the best thing to do for a big player like Grachev, since one of his bigger assets might be his physical game.

Is Nathan Horton a good comparison for Grachev's ceiling?

I would assume that Weise has earned the right to play in Hartford, most likely (he is eligible).

That'd certainly be nice. However, I really have no idea if Grachev brings the kind of grit Horton does. Horton drops the mitts on occasion and I'd say has a 35g/40a ceiling on a good team. I don't know if Grachev has that kind of production in him, but only time will tell.

Nice, I was hoping when they added his name to the Rangers Roster on NYR.com a few days ago we signed or were close to signing him.

So this means he is going to play for the Pack or the Checkers? How can he go back to russia if he has an NHL contract.

No, he won't be going back to Russia. He wanted to come and play in North America. He was drafted by Brampton Battalion in the import draft, but that was after the Rangers drafted him. So he is eligible to play anywhere the Rangers want to put him. I don't see them putting him in either Charlotte or Hartford, and he certainly won't make the NHL team.

Best bet is that he plays for Brampton, at least this year. Next year he may move to Hartford, a la Anisimov at that age. It will depend on how he adjusts to the NA game and how well he does in Brampton.

hes gonna be playing in brampton this season, DZ didnt sign yet, Kundratek im unsure about where hes gonna play, and with how weise's camp has been going he should start in hartford as he is eligible to play there being that he is already 20 years old.

Grachev is a great talent -- and his skating isn't really flawed. He is very square though as a player.

Like he is the prototype of a player who 5-10 years ago would be ranked top 5 overall gooing into the draft his draft year -- and then drop as the year processed and finnish up like 25th overall or something.

I am actually not all that high on Grachev. Like he is not at a Tyutin or Anisimov level really. He is very strong, he got great hands and allot of moves in him. He is a smooth and flashy skater -- while he might not cover a ton of ice -- and he is good in the attacking zone. But from the little I've seen he doesn't have a complete game yet -- and that gets more and more worriesome as every day pass by.

My point is only that we should be realistic when it comes to Grachev. Like he got great potential -- but any player who isn't really putting everything together at this day and age won't get far at all. So he doesn't have a high low level.
