Proposed offer before the 2001 Draft was Mathieu Garon, Andrei Markov and our two firsts (7th - Mike Komisarek and 25th - Alexander Perezhogin). Last year, the way Markov was playing, I was thinking no. But honestly, if this offer came up now, I would do it. What do you think?
I'm not sure I could do that then. All the development Theodore has over Garon would have set the team back a few years, but Kovalchuk would have been amazing to have.
As special a player as Kovalchuk is, I'm not sure anyone on this board would trade Theodore, Markov and the two 1sts for Kovalchuk.
Not me. You don't build a winner by trading all your assets away.
Komisarek and Markov are both going to be excellent players and so are the others mentioned. If we want a superstar, we can always build a base, then sign an FA or develop our own (Kastitsyn?)...

I agree with you, but Kovalchuk is a pretty special player. It is a boatload of great talent, but a player like Kovalchuk doesn't come around too often. But if it was Theodore instead of Garon, there is no way I would do that. We've got good assets for the future, all in due time the glory days could return.

Komisarek is going to be better than Derian Hatcher, you can see it in his skating and his skills handling the puck and his hitting. He's gonna get bigger, have more stamina, get used to the speed of the game and improve his reads and lateral movement... then look out. I wouldn't trade that kind of player for anyone... but that's me.

I have no doubt in my mind Komisarek will be a great player some day in this league. I wouldn't trade him for just anyone either, but for Kovalchuk that's what it would cost unfortunately. I like to bring this topic up every year, perhaps some day it will look like a complete steal for Atlanta...

He's gonna be a great player, no question. The fact that he no longer hogs the puck and is more of a team player is a sign of that.
The most amusing thing to this, in my opinion, is that apparently Savard stated that, no matter what he'd done in training camp, but had Kovalchuk come to the Habs, he was going to spend the year in the AHL - like all other Hab prospects, because that was the 'proper' way to do things.
Somehow, I think his mind would have been changed.
You guys are all forgeting that supposablely at the last minute Savard upped the trade to included any player off the roster exect for Koivu and I though someone else. It was widely speculated that the extra player was to be Zednik. So the offer stood as:
Garon (or Theo), Markov, our two 1st rounder AND Zednik for Kovalchuk.
The Thrashers never accepted our offers then and would obviously not do it now.
At the time I felt it was a risky trade and I mean way too risky of a trade too make because the Habs org was so paper thin in terms of talent at the NHL level and in the pipeline. We couldn't afford to make a 4 for 1 or 5 for 1 deal IMO. But today with the prospects and depth we now have, we could definitely make an offer like this for the next Kovalchuk if the team that has that pick wants to deal him.
Guy, I can't believe AS would say something like that. It would be typical Habs though. Pay the world for a Kovalchuk and stick him on the farm.

I remember that now. I don't remember how it worked again, but I was under the impression that Markov was the player that he used to up the anty. I thought he said anyone off the roster except Koivu AND Zednik though.
