Andre The Student - Forgotten Prospect In Exile

I've been watching post after post after post of talk about our prospect and not a word about one of our brightest prospect in the role of offensive defenseman.

Andre Benoit

Benoit, now technically an RFA whom rights the Habs have retained despite the purge of this summer that saw most of our now-obsolete depth prospects cleared off of the system, is entering the second year of his team-sponsored learning excursion in Europe. After a year playing for Tappara Tempere in Finland, where he got 38 points in 54 games, playing +28; Benoit continues his hockey studies in Sweden where he will play for Sodertalje this year, no doubt raking in similar, very nice numbers.

The 24 years old, a former undrafted free agent who was a first team All-Star in the OHL, is likely to return to the Canadiens next season an NHL level player.

Add him to McDonagh, Valentenko, Weber, Emelin & Subban and it's easy to see than the last couple years of focusing on rebuilding the D will pay HUGE dividents.

And Andre Benoit will be worth the wait.

Haha I was thinking the same thing today and thought of making a thread about it. Thanks for doing so.

We owe his rights until he turns 27.

He isn't playing in Hamilton because the team felt his style would be better developped in Scandinavia where there is better skating and passing. In ways, it's the Habs attempt at replicating Brian Rafalski's development with a similar short-ish, skilled offensive defenseman.

He's a French Ontarian, like I said Offensive D, small-ish but it doesn't kill him, good hockey tools.

Kinda like a cross between Streit and Gorges. Good offensively, good defensively. He doesn't have Streit's highlight reel passing ability and he never captained Kelowna, but trust me, he will do.

EDIT: I absolutely see him as the 6th, 7th, Powerplay specialist D in MTL next year.

Markov - Komi
Hamrlik - O'Byrne
Valentenko - Gorges/Benoit

Absolutely.

He wasn't too impressive in the Spengler Cup.

I watched it, it was on Sportsnet. I can't get into details, it was a while ago, but all I can say is he wasn't effective on the powerplay and I came away pretty disappointed.

Where did you hear this?

Also at 24 he's not a prospect anymore. He was great in the OHL though, so I'm not surprised he's doing well in the Euro leagues.

I would be very surprised if he jumped into the Habs lineup next year. As mentioned I was also not that impressed with his play in the Spengler cup. Anyone actually see him play last year in Europe that can say more?

I also think he has many defensmen in front of him, but we never know

I see his potential to play with the Habs close to Emelin's

He is doing great out there, but we don't know how he will react here...

i guess he has some tough company with Korneev and emelin maybe coming over next year as well.

Someone will have to be the 7th guy next year, as Brisebois and Dandeneault are most likely in their last year in Montreal.

but there are many many guys in Hamilton already and in College that may be ready next year too.

Benoit will have to come over first and then fight the fight of his life to get the 7th Defence position.

This is true... and he has talked about exploring the possibility of coming over after 1 more year in Russia.

This was all before he was named Captain of his team in the KHL though.

But it'd be awesome if he came over....

When someone asks
Did you know Gorges was Captain in Kelowna??

We can answer
Yeah but Korneev was KEPTIN in Russia.

There's no room for him.

Next year there will be one, MAYBE two spots open. He has to beat out the following guys: Emelin, Carle, Weber, Subban, Mcdonagh, and maybe even Fischer. Sorry dude, it's not happening.
