Ranked, it goes like this

Colaiacovo
Kronwall
Schenn
Finger
Van Ryn
White

I'm sure about positions 1, 2, and 6. The other three could be a mix up.

White had some nice puck movement, but his lack of defensive awareness earned him last place tonight.

All played pretty good imo, White messed up on one play but other than that they were all solid.

Colaiacovo was easily the best on both teams.

Other than him, I think Schenn did a great job without standing out in any real way. He's a lot smarter than people give him credit for. Any bad play he made (ex: bad point shot that got blocked) he would make up for with two good ones (good positioning leads to turnover, then a good breakout pass).

Funny how Finger was telling Schenn to relax and enjoy the game, I thought Finger looked the most nervous of the defense. Regardless, White played the worst game defensively, had that awesome pass to Earl but that's about it.

Not much good or bad to say about Kronwall or Van Ryn. Solid, but both need to show more in order to solidify a spot on the team.

Colaiacovo
Schenn
Van Ryn
Kronwall
Finger
White

I actually thought Van Ryn played pretty good for a guy whos missed as much time as he has with injuries. He was rusty, but I think he'll be better when he shakes that rust.. he showed some pretty good offensive instincts.

If I had to rank the D it would be

Colaiacovo
Schenn
Finger
Van Ryn
Kronwall
White

They were really dying for some quality puck moving defenders out there tonight I can say that much. I think they'll be alot better when Kubina/Kaberle/Stralman are inserted into the lineup.

Well apparently this years whipping boy is Ian White. Let the irrational bashing begin. He's going to be in tough to make this team but he didn't play a bad game and wasn't any worse than a couple of the other guys. If I were to rank them it would be like this....

- Colaiacovo was the best defenceman easily. He was all over the ice- in a good way.

- Schenn and Finger were probably next. Both played solid, relatively mistake free games. Both seemed a little nervous though.

- White would be next. He played a high risk, high reward game but did more good than bad.

- Kronwall and Van Ryn round out the bottom. Kronwall looked overmatched for most of the night and Van Ryn was invisible.

White plays another game like that, he is not going to make the team. Terrible in his own end, and we all know how much Coach Wilson likes that.

Interesting to see everyone rating White right at the bottom of the list. Not looking too good for him.

He's an small offensive d-man that has no defensive game. It's going to be hard for him to win a bottom pairing spot IMO. He's not exactly "needed" on this team in comparison to the other 9 defenders fighting for a spot.

He could be dealt and this team wouldn't lose a step. His type of game is not what the Leafs have been lacking these past years.. which hurts his chances I think.

I thought Kronwall and MVR were invisible in a good way myself, LA. Solid play, nothing good or bad.. I'd take that from a third pairing D any day.

White's been my whipping boy for two years, at least I can't be accused of jumping on a bandwagon.

1. colaiacovo - came out like a man possessed and played real hard.

2. schenn - strength and size is nhl calibre. he got caught out of position a few time but it never cost us. overall, good.

3. van ryn - looked wicked on the PP. hell of a shot and it always got through. didnt notice him on the D-side really, which is good.

4. finger - as advertised. solid, nothing flashy.

5. kronwall - see finger.

6. white - pass to spring earl was nice, but his troubles in the d-zone will cost him a spot on the team.

Basically how it is. He's a good skater and makes a nice home run pass, but really that's about it. Can't QB the PP, isn't a trigger man on the point. Didn't show much of any skill or commitment to defence.

To make this team, White has to prove he can do Kaberle/Kubina/Stralman's job better. Even Colaiacovo already has the inside track on him for that role after one game (although Colaiacovo will probably be used in a different role anyway.)

Me Personally was impressed with Van Ryn played a lot better than I expected in the offensive zone, and has a nice shot. Thought he played well on the powerplay and is a decent upgrade over white. Assuming the top 7 consists of

Kaberle Kubina
Colaicovo Finger
Stralman Frogren
Van Ryn
