McLaren to be traded

It seemed like it was always going to happen, but now according to Dave Pollack (beat writer for SJ Mercury News) McLaren has been forced to sit out all 3 team scrimmages due to an 'orginizational decision'. As someone else mentioned whilst commenting on the blog, I'm pretty sure this is so he doesn't get injured so that the Sharks can actually get something for him.
What would your team offer for a veteran defenseman presence?

Sure, he's tough. And the yellow visor is cool. But doesn't he have injury problems?

McLaren has little to negative trade value. It won't be much

My guess:

To Tampa Bay for Jussi Jokinen.

Clears some cap space, replaces Mitchell's minutes and makes TB a better squad defensively.

Everyone wins.

mid round pick should do it. A solid pickup for a team in need of defensive depth.

I would say I think McLaren could be a good match for Phoenix, who need a veteren, defensive defenseman for their bottom pairing. Also, with Mitchell out for a couple of months, Phoenix has Reinprecht, who while being a solid, valuable forward, is a bit of a luxury, at this point. The fact is the likes of Doan, Mueller, Jokinen, Turris, Boedker, Hanzal, ect. are likely to see the better ice time. So while it's good to have Reinprecht around, it might make sense to deal from a position of strength(forwards) to shore up a position that's a little less strong(defense). However, I think Reinprecht is a much better play than is McLaren. I don't know if San Jose is looking to add to the deal, either. Perhaps something like Reinprecht for McLaren and a guy like Joslin or Kaspar could work. Maybe a pick. Then again, I don't know if Phoenix is willing to use up their best trading chip in Reinprecht in such a deal. They might be better off waiting until a team is willing to give up a better defenseman than McLaren for him. Maybe Wellwood eats himself out of the league and Vancouver is willing to talk Krajicek for Reinprecht. Maybe Chicago's Lang gamble comes up snake eyes as no rookie centers step up as expected, and the 'Hawks might be willing to part with a young defender like Jordan Hendry. Perhaps Nashville has similar problems with the likes of Hornqvist, Jones, Pihlstrom, ect. and might be willing to trade a guy like Kevin Klein. Just some examples.

It'll probably end up being for a 5th.

I have never read something that I have disagreed with so strongly on HFboards, ever. The yellow visor is terrible at best.

Back to the point, McLaren's a solid all-around D-man, I think that there's a number of teams that would like to add him. That being said, I think his value would increase later in the year, closer to the deadline.

I'd love to see him in Edmonton. He is exactly what we need, a tough, physical, stay-at-home guy that can play 20 mins a night.

If he's playing twenty minutes a night, your team is in trouble. He's a #6.

All-around is not really an adjective I'd use to describe McLaren, who is coming off an 11 pt season and whose career high is 25 pts. Pretty good defensive d-man who can play physical. Basically at best, a poor man's Derian Hatcher, when Hatcher was good.

I know Schneider was on a big contract but at least he could potentially bring something of value to a franchise. If he had to be waived, I don't see anyone wanting McLaren at $2.5m per to be a bottom pairing blueliner.

I can't help but think that getting any return for him other than 'future considerations' would be a misguided hope for us Sharks fans.

Clearing the cap is fine - waiving him is always an option. But not too many teams will be willing to pay that salary for a farm club player, nor will Sharks ownership.

We're stuck unless someone gets desperate. I'd take anything, frankly - we've shown our hand.

Nope Tampa doesnt do it, they need a number 1 dman, they have plenty of depth defensively, and as it is they have Ranger, Meszaros, Carle, O'Brien, Lundin, Smaby, Wishart, Mihalik, Niskala and Hutchinson all fighting for the 7 spots available. Also in the 2 preseason games so far Jussi Jokinen has been the best player and it is thought that he will become the third line centre while Halpern is out and then move back to wing once he returns. But Ouellet is available for trading if anyone is interested as I dont think anyone knows where he would fit in in tampas plans.

One would imagine that if Tampa had any interest in McLaren, they would have mentioned it back when these two teams were finalizing the Boyle trade. Granted, Tampa subsequently partook in a 2-for-1 trade of defensemen with Ottawa, but Picard was not exactly a shoe-in for their roster to begin with, and he certainly isn't a McLaren-type of player.

The only thing stopping McLaren from being traded is another team not wanting him.

Maybe the Pens and Sharks should swap McLaren for Sydor every so often just to freshen up the Trade boards in terms of proposals...

I can't really see the Sharks that interested in receiving a player in exchange who'll have to stick around on the NHL roster. (Including Semenov's NHL pending contract, the Sharks have 8 NHL-caliber defensemen. And Joslin or others could fill any hole created by a trade.)

Now maybe if it was something like McLaren and Goc for ~$1m player.

But I'm thinking it may be more like McLaren and "low" pick for unsigned draftee or mid-round pick.

The Sharks also have a surplus of goalie prospects, so they might add one to sweeten the deal. (2 going pro next summer, plus another couple the year after that.)
