I'm not up to date on him - I've always thought him to be a bottom pairing D-man...

but I'm likely mis-informed. I just think 4 years is a long time for him? But I'm likely not up to date about the guy.

Murray is a tough as nails, take no **** from anyone type of defenseman who saw his game elevate tremendously last year. For most of his career he had been a 6-7 defenseman, but his minutes increased by 7 minutes a game last year and he solidified himself probably as a 4-5 defenseman. He isn't fast and isn't the best offensively, but he doesn't make many defensive mistakes and his big body (240 lbs) comes in handy when it comes to protecting the puck and needing a big hit to be delivered.

I would expect around 1.5-2 million per year since DW is good at locking up players at good prices ahead of FA, but probably closer to the 2 million mark.

This basically sums it up.

He can really change the flow of the game, however, with one of his body checks. I don't think I've ever seen him really take a big hit. He's built like a tree trunk.

People hit him and they fall over.

I'm thinking this will be in the Josh Gorges contract mold...I'm surprised how well Murray can play considering how slow he is...if you would have asked me a couple years ago which future Shark would have a better career, Alexei Semenov or Douglas Murray, I would have gone with the former...(of course, Semenov is pretty awful)

I wonder if Murray will upstage his own best offensive highlight of his life this season (last year, of course, the shot that was tipped in by Thornton vs. Calgary with like 9 seconds left)...it would be cool if someone like Murray made clutch offensive plays out of nowhere at key times, just for the novelty of it...like Niclas Wallin for Carolina when they play New Jersey...

/random thoughts

I thought I would add this video of Murray since it describes him pretty well.

That was the best game Murray had ever played, IMO. It would be nice if he racked up more points. I wonder if he has gotten any faster because he has always been a slow skater for his size.

I thought he was one of the most improved players in the league last season, and his improvement in his skating was a big part of that.

4 years is a pretty long time period to commit to a bottom pairing guy, but Murray seems to fit in well on the Sharks. He's just about the slowest skater in the league, but plays his positional well so he isn't often exposed... 2 mill would be too much if you ask me, I'd expect somewhere in the range of 1.3-1.5 mill

this is a strange signing.

4 years for a very physical, but very slow bottom pairing d-man.

Apparantly the deal is worth 10 million; 2.5 million per year

About a million too high!

yeah I'd say so. Murray is a safe bet to be a steady depth guy over the next 4 years but obviously has very little in the way of upside / potential... The Sharks have enough good contracts on their team so it won't really matter, but this is definetly not the best contract..

We should have signed him to a 10 year contract at 2.5 mil per price, what a bargain.

4 years/$10 million for Doug Murray? He's a good depth defenseman and fun to watch, but as mentioned, it's not like he's bursting with upside.

Random.

Sounds a lot like what Kyle McLaren got for his latest deal.

It's neither a good nor a bad deal, but it's not gonna break the bank, he will most likely break a few players for the next 4 seasons though
