Dropping in the chatroom for a few minutes just to kvetch has been recently identified as the leading cause of kickbans in North America. It's bad for your health.
We exist to try to have fun, either because of or in spite of what's going on on the ice. That's really the whole idea. Conspiracy theories to the contrary, we don't exist to stamp out all negative thought; when things are going poorly, we're just generally feeling annoyed ourselves and don't need the reinforcement. Have FUN, damnit.
Most of the servers allow connecting through ports other than 6667 (I believe vbirc.net and vbirc.com allow 6665-6669, 7000 and 9999). How you do that kind of depends on the client you're using.
If you're using the Java client (if you don't know what a "client" is in this context and you just follow the link, you're using the Java client), it's an absolute royal pain in the a** to get around this because thanks to the way HFBoards has set up their chat system, we can't just provide a helpful link. So, here's what you do:
Immediately type "/quit" in the message box and hit Enter. (This just stops it from trying to connect to the server with the wrong port.) The message box is this thing:
Next, type "/server irc.vbirc.com 9999" and hit Enter. This reconnects to the server, using a port that's hopefully not blocked.
If all goes well, you'll be connected to the server and sent to the CBJ chatroom automatically (if you're not sent to the chatroom, try "/join #cbj" after it's connected; it should tell you when). If you're not lucky... well, PM me and I'll try to help.
Hope this helps...
I'll try this out and get back to you. Cross your fingers!
