Cliff Fletcher threw genius out the window with the way he handled the whole McCabe situation.

McCabe's butt ugly NMC contract is now in Florida and Cliff told us he was going to hit a home run and this is a grand slam here. Recovering $11+ mil in Salary Cap space was a stroke of Genius and saved MLSE nearly $10 mil if a buyout had been needed to be used for getting out of that binding contract.

Fletcher has been receiving praise from the MLSE BOG and Peddie for the job he has been doing in "clearing the slate". I guess a few fans are too emotionally attached and involved to a few declining players, that they're missing the big picture of what is the goal and what is going on in Toronto currently.

But lets accentuate the positives, that McCabe is gone and Leaf Nation has a bunch of new and exciting players to cheer for now as we move forward to better times ahead.

Sorry, could you name the "new and exciting" players that Fletch has brought in again?

I'm starting to like the lines.

I'd probably end up switching Steen and Stajan's linemates, so that we're looking something like this:

Antropov - XXXXXX - Kulemin
Tlusty - Steen - Blake
Poni - Stajan - Hagman
Hollweg - Moore - Mayers
(Grabovski - Mitchell)

And then the only thing we'd have to do is sign Sundin and plop him in there in that 1st line spot, and we'd actually have a decent set of forwards.

Very nice 3rd and 4th lines, decent 2nd line, and a nice first line too if Sundin would ever re-sign.

Of course, if we're forced to plug a kid like Grabo into that 1st line C spot, then we're not looking so good.

grabo is good though, so why demote him to mitchell status? even if we did get sundin back, id still want to see what he could do with tlusty or kulemin as linemates

This could get ugly really quickly.

Maybe they'll ask the Pens to put out some AHL defenders for a shift or two.

Wonder if they'd dress Grabovski and use him on the PP ... if he proves he can contribute there?

The good thing is he doesn't need clear waivers so he'd be a good player for the Marlies.

He's atrocious in the circle so perhaps they'll move him out to wing, paired with good defensive players.

Without Sundin:

Tlusty - Antropov - Kulemin
Grabovski - Steen - Blake
Poni - Stajan - Hagman
Hollweg - Moore - Mayers
(Mitchell - Bell)

Mitchell has impressed me a hell of a lot more then grabovski has so far.

Via 2 pre-season games? Or is it 1? Honestly, good or bad, the pre-season is useless for almost everything but the most base assessments of a player. Even in the regular season, using a game or two to describe any player is pretty silly.

This isn't meant to single you out in particular, but is somewhat of a call for sanity on this board where I've seen whole scouting reports written about a fricken pre-season game.

That's really the whole thing. With Sundin, our forwards are mediocre/average. Without Sundin, they're god awful. Without him there's no legit top line, 2nd liners become first liners, etc. With Sundin, we're probably scrapping for the 10-11th seed or something similar.

I don't see what the problem is with scouting reports. Some people either can't get the game (which may be the case tonight), or missed games and want to know how players did.

I for one appreciate the detailed scouting reports.

I think his point was people saying things like "Moore made the team tonight on the strength of his efforts" or suggesting Grabovski be sent down after one game each. It's nice to see how the new guys are doing, but one game per player have people drastically altering their projections already.

zeke why would you want Sundin at this point?

resist the urge. I know it's tempting, I've been tempted myself, but we'll be cursing that move near seasons end.

I guess it's because I really believe in Wilson - I think he'll really help turn this team around, and that it'll be pretty good, and we won't be battling for a bottom spot.

And since I don't think Bell and VanRyn are going to be key contributors this year....I look at the team, I see there's almost $13-15 mil in capspace available....and I see that the only really glaring hole is that we simply don't have a 1st line.....and I just think we can be much better than most people think, pretty easily.

Forsberg - Sundin - Antropov
Tlusty - Steen - Blake
Poni - Stajan - Hagman
Hollweg - Moore - Mayers
(Grabovski - Mitchell - Kulemin)

Kaberle - Kubina
Colaiacovo - Finger
Frogren - Stralman
(Kronwall - White)

Toskala
Joseph
(Pogge)

If key youngsters like Tlusty, Steen, and Colaiacovo step up into those roles like they most definitely have the skill to.....that's a pretty darn good team right there.

I'll agree with you Zeke, but the only way I want Sundin back is if they can add one good young winger to play with him, as opposed to Forsberg, and I'm all for using Antropov and Poni to get one.

Mark Bell - Boyd Devereaux - John Mitchell
good looking lines... ones that i think could work quite nicely.

i would love to see a steen-hagman-tlusty or steen-antropov-kulemin line.

hmmm, well without getting into too much of a debate let's just say I strongly disagree without your line-up and your reasoning. bringing Mats back, signing a has been 'name' player hoping for a huge season, demoting Grabovski and Kulemin to the bench... short sighted and backward thinking, doomed to repeat past failures.

time to bite the bullet.

That team is pretty much last year's minus mccabe, with improvement on the wing and more maturity in our young forwards. Looks like a solid 9th place contender.
