I never heard the story of the "Holmgren Gate" until today. I love it.
They fought on the ice. Holmgren was always sensitive to an eye injury he received in the minors. He felt Cashman tried to gouge him in an on-ice fight. Afterwards, he freaked by the locker rooms. Cashman claimed Holmgren kicked him, too. Great account by Plimpton in his book. Plimpton played goal for the Bruins that game and when the fight was happening he was delivering a speech in Ovations (private club). He said he got good-natured grief for not being part of the Bruins when they needed him the most -- part of the brawl; he was grateful.
part of the history of the flyers is always having one of the toughest fighters in the game. they should have made a mention of this. brown, wilson, cochran, kordic. berube and all the like. they should have found a way to put that in the days events. plus the nhl would have not been happy to boot so even would have been a double bonus. surpries honestly that they didnt adresss the tough guys in some way
