If he puts it all together, Semin will be a 50+ goal scorer. I'm not sure how he measures up to Vanek in the other departments though.

Semin's certainly got the better contract.

Semin will make 5 million in 09/10, then be an RFA. Vanek then will be making 6.4 all the way through 2013. I think Vanek's contract is better; it's my same argument for Nash's v. Vanek's contract.

Cap hits are what matter though. Semin is 4.6, Vanek is 7.1. Semin will probably score more goals, has a smaller cap hit, and his rights are retained.

It was mostly a joke though, that's really a salient point to the discussion.

Vanek. He stumbled out of the gate last season and still ended up with 43 goals.

Cap hits only matter to teams spending to the cap. Buffalo isn't, so really it's the salary paid out that Buffalo cares about.

In other words, the value of his contract to the Sabres is different than what it would be to, say, the Capitals.

Thomas Vanek

The Sabres best goal scorer an underrated passer and a good 2-way player

Based on what? I doubt Semin ever gets to Vanek's level in terms of goal-scoring.

And For the record, Vanek is one of the hardest backcheckers in the league. Not saying he's anything like John Madden, but he works his butt off. So he isn't as one dimensional as usually perceived.

TV is the clear choice here, IMO. That could change if Semin decides to be the player he's capable of being, but who knows if that will ever happen.

No he didn't, he stumbled out of the gate last season and scored 36* goals. The prior season on a Buffalo powerhouse he scored 43 goals.

Semin by far. He is an amazing player and some think he is more skilled then Ovechkin. Ovechkin is all around much better then Semin but Semin's wrist shots, his skating, his stick handling are some of the best in the world. I like Vanek a lot but i am afraid his best season might be behind him.

Based on what, considering Semin has never and will never outscore Vanek.

Semin turned a corner last season in the playoffs. This is a guy that almost scored 40 goals with Kris Beech as his center. Now that he'll get time with Fedorov, Nylander, and/or Backstrom and considering the positive influence Fedorov has had on him, his production will improve as long as he stays healthy. I'm thinking he'll hit 50 this year, but I'm an optimist. I don't know if Vanek gets that high this year, but I agree they'll probably be close one way or the other.

If we're looking at how they finished last season, Vanek was 2nd to Ovechkin in goal post-all-star break (a 55 goal pace). So even then Vanek has Semin beat.
