Do you think Beliveau and Bourque can't handle physical play? Both are known to handle the traffic and rough play, both also are 1000+ PIM guys, taking penalties when necessary to stop a play or stand up for themselves, but still the classiest gentlemen, in a non Lady Byng mold.

Yeah, it's the pick you thought I'd make, but you notice cottonking's "I bet $35 I know who VI will pick" post has suddenly disappeared.

Bourque would look great with Brian Boitano centering his team's top line.

While very true, if I'm sacrificing depth for a strong one-two punch, Beliveau-Bourque is certainly strong enough.

It disappeared because it was a joke with a very short shelf-life (i delete plenty of old, stupid posts) ... Bourque was obvious.

Not saying Bourque's a *****, just a fine human being, something that can't be said about many of the guys he'll be playing against.

I got the idea to float the offer after seeing divisional rival Devils trade away its first rounder for a second rounder and depth picks and thinking, "Hey, I could that, in reverse."

These kinds of trades put pressure on all parties involved to draft well. Do so, and they can be major win-win trades, there being many different ways of building a good team.

I'll take it, if you're comfortable with a GM two picks ahead of you sitting on your list, that is.

Bah, another trade up by VanI, we'll see how he does ''THIS'' time ... has it ever payed off? Don't want to sound rude but you traded up the last two drafts with ''very'' mitigate result (for a GM your quality, I don't think 2nd round exit is a victory at all)

However, gotta say I had peged 70's to pick R.Bourque at that position. 7/10

EDIT: After reading back my post, I'm rough on you VanI. A Béliveau-Bourque duo is as sweet as it can be. Enjoy your ''lead'' while it last

Nice move in trading up, VanI. Didn't really cost you that much at all to get Bourque. Leadership won't be an issue for New Haven.

I've never understood why GMs trade out of the first round. 70s won't pick until his second round selection, which will be in the late 40s. Most GMs will have two picks before he has any.

Incidentally, I always thought Bourque should have won a Byng: a franchise defenceman who plays a skilled, two-way game, and controls his own zone with smart play and positioning. He might also be the best diver to ever play the game. And I mean that as a compliment. Bourque's dives were strategic. Mario Lemieux was a terrible diver. And that's not a compliment.

(Bourque might have topped 1,000 PIMs, but he wasn't overly physical. At a time when PIMs were pretty easy to come by, Bourque's career high was 96).

The VanI Late Pick-o-Metre is now at eight. The over-under for the number of picks VanI has in the final four rounds is at 10.5. Place your bets, gentlemen.

I have a really good idea of who pappy is going to pick. And if it's who I think it is, it's going to shock a lot of people.

I think I know whom you're thinking about. Actually, I would see pappy pick 2 guys at this point.
Let's just say that it will be a mild surprise, if everyone acts like I think they'll act.

We wanted a defender, so we were really down to a decision between Shore and Harvey. In this debate, I personally lean towards Shore because I feel he peaked higher, although there's excellent arguments to be made for both sides. My esteemed colleague Mr. Middleton concurred.

He's ranked as the #2 defender of all time on the HFBoards Top-100 list, and with good reason. He simply dominated his position, and his era. He placed spectacularly in Hart voting, not only winning 4, but also finishing 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, and 5th. He was a first-team allstar 8 times, and he'd have a few more if they had existed in the first 4 years of his career. Offensively he dominated the defensive position, and even cracked the top-10 in NHL scoring on two occasions. What makes him a really fun pick is this mix of elite offense with his downright nastiness. While his temper hurt him at times, there's something to be said for a guy who'll put the fear of God into the opposition. And most importantly, Eddie Shore is a pick that covers a lot of bases for us. It gives us an stud defender, a legendary physical presence, and an elite puck-rusher on which to build our offense.

To answer LL's question, I think Lemieux has to be the slowest skater taken.

Bourque absolutely had to be the 10th pick. There was no one better. I wanted to get an elite goalie but to get one 10th would be a waste of a 10th pick, hence why I wanted to trade down (a bit) - Sturminator had me interested in his 16th pick but couldn't make me a good offer, then VI came along.

GBC: The last championship team had no standout superstar and was built on depth. I'll have all my starting lineup except my 11th and 12th forwards and backup goalie selected by the end of round 14. Don't be too quick to criticize.

Euh... WHAT? Lemieux has to be considered in the upper half of the Top-10 as far as speed is concerned!

The three D-Mens and Hull were faster than Lemieux (or must be considered such), but that's it.

Actually, they did have a superstar. And they had their second pick right after No. 50. The key to pappy's squad was a trade that gave his team a couple extra picks in Rounds 4 to 6. And he made the right picks with those selections, too. That always helps.

I think you could have gotten more for a top 10 pick.

As for the slowest skater, it doesn't matter. With hockey sense and will to win that these players have, skating isn't much of an issue. As for the questioned speed of Beliveau and Lemieux, they're so strong on their skates, and so agile, for such big players, that it makes up for any perceived lack of mobility.
