Jaroslav Halak [post preseason performance]

Halak has won another game for the Habs. With a real team in front of him (well technically the big 3 Hammer, Markov and KRex were not in habs uniform), Halak has shown he can mend the net. I am wondering who would be interested in his services and at what price. This guy WILL want to play more, and I think he deserves to be n.1 goaltender in the NHL. Sucks that Montreal already has Price, or I would be amazed to see Halak at every game.

He has dominated the AHL and shows great success in the NHL, are you interested?

I'd love him in Boston. I think a future combo of Rask-Halak would be great.

He's playing some great hockey, and this is probably a message to Gainey to go knock on the doors of the 29 other NHL teams to see if he can do anything for Halak. Gainey is smiling at the prospect of this idea, and is not in a rush since he will let Halak build his value. At this point, Halak is not very well known so he can only do himself good by playing the few games he might get, and maybe hoping to be traded to a team before the deadline (à la Huet).

And his contract is one to dream for!

Yes I am. I doubt they'd trade him to Ottawa unfortunately.

You'd think the way the goalie market has gone lately (Toskala and Vokoun notwithstanding) you probably wouldn't get more than a 2nd

There's no way he's getting traded... why do our own fans keep bringing him up? I really don't get it.

Halak might just be a Huet.
He has put good numbers so far.
Unless we put him in a package for something very decent otherwise keep him

After last nights game I don't see why they would trade him. He can come in and steal 10 of his 17 starts for the Habs (Price gets solid 65 games in second year, makes sense) and not cost you anything. Plus if Price isn't the next Luongo you need him there to take over.

This just in: the preseason means peanuts. Kiprusoff was hit for 6 goals by the Sedin-less Canucks tonight, with Phaneuf/Regehr/Aucoin/Sarich all in the lineup... Does this mean Halak is better than Kiprusoff?

No.

If Halak is ever traded it will be later in the year. Right now he's a cheap, quality backup. He won't get you a good return in a trade because GMs still want to see how he handles the NHL in the long run. Meanwhile Gainey wants to wait and see if Denis regains his form in Hamilton. If Denis puts his career back on track, then Gainey can start thinking about trading Halak, at least if his trade value goes up. Currently, he'll get you a pick + a lesser goaltender. Halak is not an untouchable but moving him right now is not even on the "crazy things I could do tomorrow" list.

But I think the point is that Halak won't want to be a back up. Unless you're thinking about paying Rask his 3.x million dollars to back-up Halak... didn't think so. I can't see why he'd go from backing up Price to backing up Rask. Undoubtedly though, it would be a decent duo.

If Denis puts his career back on track, he will be the first one in trade talks, NOT Halak. A new and improved Denis with his years of NHL experience would bring back much more than a steady-as-always Halak with a few dozen games under his belt. Even THEN, the return wouldn't be worth it. Best to keep them all until someone really starts complaining.

I want to see Edmonton get him, but I don't see EDM and MTL being good trade partners, as both are in similar situations with depth.

Players I could see being available from EDM are:

Schremp
Brule
Pouliot
O'Marra
Roloson
Staios
Moreau
and possibly Grebeshkov

Hey just to defend us we didn't have Sedins, Bernier, or our Top 4 D dressed (Also no Darcy Hordicuk (1 goal in the preseason!)

But back to the point... Denis is on a two-way, and sucks, a lot.
Price is still a young goalie who's going to get shaken up and need a relief at some point this season. Unless by trading Halak you are receiving a capable Backup as well as whatever else you're expecting, it's not worth it.

Honestly,

Halak may turn out better than Price. It is a good situation to have with the Habs - but Halak will either turn out to be the Habs starter or he will be a superstar on another team.

He might not be the best known goalie in the league from a fan POV, but when Gainey was trying to move Huet at the deadline last year, he said there was more interest in Halak than Huet. Clearly he is on the radar of a number of teams, although quite how interested such teams are is up for debate. Still, Jaro has been one of the best, arguably the best goalie in the AHL (when he was there) the past two years and has played some very good games in the NHL, most teams will probably be aware of him to some degree by now.

As for moving him, I'd say no to any offer that doesn't either make the team much better now or give us a very good asset(s) for the future. He has done well in our system and he can help the Habs this year and in forthcoming years. Chances are he doesn't have near that value to other teams yet, but that isn't a problem. We can keep him and get good results from him at a good value.
