Henrik Tallinder

Rumor has it he may be on the outs in Buffalo.
There's been talk of possible trades on the Sabres board, so I'm throwing this out there to see what he's worth to fans of the rest of the league.

He's a legit #1 when he's on, but he's been shaky lately. A change of scenery might be what the doctor ordered.

What are Buffalo's needs? He would fit in nicely on Edmonton's blue line.

I don't think Gionta has more value than Tallinder. Tallinder still has two years left on a reasonable contract, and is a #1 defenseman when healthy. I would take out Jokinen and add a mid-round pick from NJ's end in this deal. Plus, the Sabres really do not need any more forwards to add to the logjam.

As much as I would love to see Gionta come to Buffalo, we have a surplus of right wings now. That would mean possibly putting Stafford on the fourth line. I don't think I would want to lose Hank right now either.

I'd say Buffalo could use some center depth, futures, and/or perhaps a serviceable D-man to replace Tallinder.

What we absolutely do NOT need are wingers. Although I'd like to see us acquire another center for depth, we still have too many forwards as it stands.

Although honestly, I think the rumor that Tallinder is no longer in favor is pure baloney. Hamilton has his sources, but this just seems like it makes no sense what so ever.

Not that it's going to happen, but I'd love to see Tallinder on the Rangers. I've always felt that he is one of the league's most underrated players. He's a very intelligent and hard-working defender. What he ISN'T is a number one defenseman, as someone in the thread suggested. I think that's a tad ridiculous. But he is a good player.

I would prefer him to Mara and Kalinin on our blueline, certainly.

He's a legit #1? Maybe in his best game, once per season.

not sure why i think this would be a good trade but it would help the Rangers salary wise and by the time Tallinder's contract would be up Sanguinetti and Del Zotto may be ready to step up, in my opinion we need to lose a big contract while getting someone who would replace Rozsival's minutes and i have always liked Tallinder.

Both Prucha and Afinogenov's contracts are up at the end of the season so if they dont do well then they dont need to be kept but although i think Afinogenov is pretty unpredictable he would suit the Rangers faster style they are going for but his turnovers worry me though. Prucha in my opinion needs a change of scenery and if the rumour of him being dropped is true then him leaving may be inevitable.

I think the Rangers would need to add something what i dont know but if Buffalo needed a Centre prospect the Rangers have plenty just not Anisimov or maybe with having Rissmiller add Betts but it depends on what Buffalo would want, anyway here is what i thought flame away.

Rozsival ($5m) 4yrs/ Prucha ($1.6m) 1yr / ?

for

Tallinder ($2.55m) 2yrs/ Afinogenov ($3.3m) 1yr

Henrik Tallinder is not a "legit #1 when he's on". He's a very solid #2/3 when he's playing to his potential but definitely not a legit #1 guy. There are only so many legit #1's and Tallinder does not fit into that category, at least not IMO.

I agree, I sort of did overstate him, but he's shown he can be a more than capable top-pairing defenseman.
I misspoke and I hope it doesn't take away from the discussion at hand.

As for return we still need:
A defensively oriented center who wins faceoffs, veteran preferred.
More physicality on the blueline.

He is absolutely a #1 D-man when he is on. The 05-06 playoffs and the beginning of 06-07 before he got hurt are proof. Had he not gotten hurt and played the rest of 06-07 at the same level, he could have been a Norris contender (his offensive numbers might not have been good enough unfortuantely). In January this year, he had a stretch of 10 games where--against top opposition and logging top pairing minutes--he wasn't on the ice for a single goal against, both ES, PP, and PK. If that's not a sign of a legit #1, I really don't know what is.

Problem is, since that injury early in 06-07, he hasn't captured that dominant form for longer stretches of time. But to say that when he's on he isn't a #1 D-man is completely inaccurate. It's just a question of how often will he be "on."

Is Tallinder better than Chris Phillips? Because Phillips is NOT a number 1 d.

Who/where was it said Tallinders on the outs? I'm sure they'd waive Paetsch to get rid of a dman instead of trading Tallinder.

One season and a playoff run does not make one a "legit #1 defender". Although maybe you and I have different opinions of what a legit #1 is. I see players such as Nick Lidstrom, Chris Pronger, Sergei Zubov, Andrei Markov, Tomas Kaberle, Dion Phaneuf, Zdeno Chara as legit #1 d-men, players who would be the defensive leader on the majority of NHL teams. Players such as Mattias Ohlund, Michal Rozsival, Dan Hamhuis, Roman Hamrlik and the aforementioned Henrik Tallinder are guys I would consider strong #2's, but wouldn't be the defensive leader on most squads around the NHL.

I guess you are correct in that regard. But then again, that's what separates the "legit #1's" from the rest, consistency.
