Brett Sonne

You gotta love this kid -------

October 3, 2008
Could've bin even better

Sonne scores once and adds two assists despite extended stay in penalty box

By SCOTT FISHER

It must be an unofficial record of some kind.

Brett Sonne likely had less ice time last night than any first star in the history of the Calgary Hitmen franchise.

How do you sit in the penalty box for half the game and still be named first star?

Make the most of your ice time.

Sonne was Mr. Efficiency last night, setting up a pair and scoring the game- winner before being banished to the sin bin for 27-plus minutes.

He was finally released with about five minutes to go, but never took another shift.

"Obviously, you want to get out there," Sonne said after the Hitmen beat the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-2 at the 'Dome.

"But when you sit out for that long, you don't want to pull anything."

Sonne assisted on a pair of Kyle Bortis goals and Carson McMillan added some insurance for the Hitmen.

Austin Fyten and Dwight King replied for the visitors, who won nine of 10 against Calgary last season.

Sonne had a brilliant night going until early in the second period when pair of Hurricanes blasted Brandon Kozun from behind right in front of the Hitmen bench.

Sonne sprinted across the ice, grabbed one of the offending parties -- Derek Ryckman -- and started wailing away.

The league's leading scorer ended up with 27 minutes in penalties -- the instigator, a fighting major and a pair of misconducts, the second for not having his jersey tied down.

"(Kozun) is not the biggest guy, so I just wanted to look out for him," Sonne said.

I really like his style of play and upside. I didn't know much about him when we drafted him last year, but he has the potential to be quite the diamond in the rough. I'm hoping he continues the scoring pace this season in the WHL, and hopefully we see him in Peoria next season

He's off to a great start, just like last year, with 11 points in 7 games to lead the WHL in scoring. A nice mixture of toughness and skill! Let's hope he stays injury-free this year!

I have been saying this after seeing him play last year at the prospect tournament - I think this guy has a legit future with the blues.

He has been playing lights out hockey to start the year. Playing on the top line with Kyle Bortis and Brandon Kozun, he's been a force all over the ice. Great two way player.

Sonne, leading his team in scoring after 20 games (9-20-29) has been chosen to represent Canada in the 6th annual ADT Canada Russia Challenge beginning in 2 weeks.

Sonne now leads the WHL in scoring by one point (11 G, 23 A, 34 P), followed by Evander Kane and Jamie Benn.

Great name, great player. He should be available around picks 6-14, and judging from the way the Blues are playing, they'll be picking right around there.

What I "care to give" is advice to look for older threads regarding specific players. We Blues fans are very "up to date" on our prospects. Thank you.

Anyone else find it hard to believe he isn't even ranked in the top 19 on Hockey's Future?

Yeah, Sonne will definitely move up in the rankings the next time HF puts a list together.

The Canadian Jrs had an intrasquad game tonight and Sonne had 2 goals and an assist.

LINK to summary/boxscore.

Hey guys, wings fan here in peace (for once ) I live in calgary, seen sonne play alot. This year he is getting alot better shot to show what he has, and is tearing the league up. He has a great shot and isnt afraid to get his nose dirty (I know, obvious). I really think he could be a great player in the nhl, kelly kisio I dont think gets alot of credit for all these players he rolls out (ryan white, justin pogge, karl alzner, some getzlaf dude, ect). Anyway the play of sonne is a MAJOR reason the hitmen have been ranked 2-3 in the canadian hocky league all year, also he is actually pretty good defensively too, something kisio tries to get out of his players (doesnt work all the time- see pavol Brendl). Good to see the blues having all this talent, wanna see our rivalry start up again.

peace

calgarywing fan, thanks for the info. Would you mind giving a bit more of a scouting report. How well does he skate, what kind of speed, face offs, does he kill penalties, playmaking abilities, leadership and anything else you think would be of interest? Thanks

I hope he means on the Blues.

I thought he should have made our list before many, but he had not proven his abilities yet. Granted, I didn't think he would be this good.

It just goes to show you that you never know when you're going to find a diamond in the rough.

I love this kid, he has a chance to be a star I think. I think he'll be with the club in two years. We need scoring badly.

I watched Sonne closely at the WJC this year and he looked pretty good for Team Canada. He was used in checking line role, and was effective. I liked his speed, hands, and two-way game. As an overager in the WHL playing for a very good team he was dominant and put up good numbers. He will need to gain some strength and spend some time in the AHL to adjust to the faster pace/more physical game. I think he will have a chance to play some games w/ the Blues next year if he has a good camp and shows he can play at the AHL level.

If the Blues end up w/ Sonne, Palushaj, and Eller all at Peoria to start next season the Rivermen fans will be in for a treat! It's too bad that McCrae can't play for Peoria next year. It would be nice to get all those guys playing together done there.

I see Sonne as developing into a good 3rd liner at the NHL level. It's possible he could top out as a 2nd liner but I wouldn't bet on it. He's having a very impressive season but lets remember he's 19 in a league of primarily 16-19 yr olds. He should be a nice addition to Peoria next season.

I think he's surpassed expectations but not to the degree that he's now some sort of future superstar or anything. If you look at his skills and not just his stats, he's projects to a very good, defensively resposible 3rd liner who can chip in some offense.

Palushaj would definitely be drafted ahead of Sonne if the 2007 draft was re-held today.
