2008-2009 General NHL Viewing Thread

The Lightning look like they are making a point of putting on a heavy forecheck.

Rumors of Lundqvist's injury may be exaggerated, apparently.

Those Czech penalty boxes are spacious.

Just found it, thanks. Always the last one I check... NBC, Versus, Center Ice. You so rarely see actual live hockey on the Hockey Network. Always forgetting.

Interesting match-up, given the turnover on both teams and their likely weaknesses this season.

Heward is suited up for Tampa.

I'm not liking the Steve Armitage/Marc Crawford broadcast team. I've always found Armitage a little boring when he calls hockey and Crawford isn't the most exciting guy to be adding colour commentary.

Crawford clearly has knowledge, but the voice is rather nasal and squeaky for broadcasting. Maybe a studio gig.

I am fully aware of hubrus, over-confidence, etc., but neither of these teams is particularly impressive right now, IMHO. Early in the season, chemistry, odd season opener, all could be contributing factors, of course.

Olie almost had to come in as Smith got shaken up just a bit ago.

Smith isn't that good, Naslund should have 4 goals right now but can't finish into empty nets.

there's no way TB should be in this game but somehow they are.

I'd go ahead and peg Gomez and Naslund for decent seasons, but on the whole, the Rangers are going to be awfully dependent on Lundqvist again, I think, especially in a tough division.

The Lightning? Well, they look to be as expected. It was an inspired decision to re-make the team with youth, but it will take time for, 1) all the new players to gel, and 2) the younger players, particularly on defense, to mature. The talent in TB is impressive, but it likely won't do much this year. Watch out in 2-3 years, though.

I'm not sure I see a big youth movement in Tampa. Mezaros, Stamkos, maybe Carle, but I don't see a cadre of youngsters coming down the line for the Lightning. Their line-up today has maybe three youngsters with significant upside, but the rest (Ranger is argueable) are either in their prime, or have seen it, by my wonky reckoning.

Not sure I see a lot of impact players down the pipe, either. They will probably get a good goalie out of it, but if you're bumping up against the cap, I'm not sure you can be considered to be going with a youth movement. Looks to me like they are going for it now, though I disagree with the path they are taking.

I don't see a deep prospect pool. I see a solid defense that is young, which in two or three years, will be impressive. Stamkos is going to give them two legitimate scoring lines by year's end. The youth isn't in the system, it's on the ice right now, but it will need time to find its sea legs.

The one who will slow down by the time the rest are mature is likely St. Louis. He's at his prime and will start to decline. The others will stay at a plateau or improve.

The question is whether ownership has any patience. Recent history suggests otherwise.

I think where you and I disagree is the solid defense aspect. I don't see any solid defenseman outside of Ranger on their roster now, or in 3 years. Four offensive defenseman with a two-way guy (Ranger) and a defense-first wingnut (O'Brien) is sub-impressive. Maybe Smaby comes in and settles things down, but I don't think he's a factor for 3 years.

The Ligntning are going to need at least another draft or a FA signing to get that group to solid status.

You may be right about where we differ. I really like Mezsaros and I think I like Carle. What they both need, as much as anything else, is a lot of minutes and opportunity, and time to commit their learning curve mistakes and mature. The team will suffer while that is happening, but in time I think both of those guys are studs.

Now those three (with Ranger) are all puck movers. They'll certainly need to bring in a defense-first player at some point. Good core, though.

The Rangers defense looked bad and soft. Caps are gonna take it to King Henrik all season if they don't get aggressive in front of him.

Tampa can't get the puck out of their own zone, but this Defense is younger then ours in the rebuild (though arguably more skilled), watching this makes me really happy we had Witt around.

If we get a good forecheck going both these teams aren't going to be too hard.
