Not clear who would go back, unless, of course Chicago gave up and ended up letting him be claimed on re-entry waivers. ($3.375M paid against both teams' salary caps).
How much is Budaj making? Or Raycroft, for that matter?

I don't think there was any possible way Vancouver would lose that game...but I didn't think it would be thatlopsided.

Is Calgary that bad...or is Vancouver that good?

Toronto beat Detroit last night. Anything can happen on a given night.

Detroit was ridiculously sloppy. I'm talking Caps-under-Hanlon sloppy. Kulemin's goal-while a nice finish by him-was a giftwrapped breakaway opportunity. I can remember at least 2 more awful turnovers Detroit committed in the third period alone.

Could Stanley have a bit of a hangover?

There would have to be more salary coming back to Chicago, then. But not too much.

Vancouver had an emotional game last night on many levels:
1) home opener
2) season opener
3) Luc Bourdon (sp?) tribute game

i think they would beat anyone last night.

I was surprised the canucks looked so good. We'll see if it was a fluke tomorrow night in calgary.

But if they win that game handily...they might be a better team then people give them credit for.

I really like the bernier pickup and i think a guy like mason raymond could be really good this year. I like that kid.

I agree.....it should be noted that the Flames missed quite a few layups on the PP too.

1) The Flames really miss Robyn Regehr when he is out of the lineup. Phaneuf has a ton of talent, but he pinches injudiciously and takes himself out of position to make a hit on a regular basis. Regehr just pays the bills, and anchors that defense corps.

2) The tribute probably pumped up the club.

3) The Canucks are probably a little underrated, and the Flames somewhat overrated, relative to the rest of the Northwest Division, entering the 2008-09 season.

they sure did, seems they could not buy a break in front of the net all night.

i actually watched the DUCKS vs SHARKS tilt last night - really good pace and the line of Marleau / Thornton / Setoguchi was crazy... ol' Devin can thank his lucky stars he gets to play alongside those 2 guys - career year in the works for him.

and man can Marleau skate - i've coveted him for years and was really excited when there were rumblings that he was on the move a few years back... oh well

after Cheechoo scored his second of the night, the on-the-bench commentator told him he was on pace for 164 goals... i dont think Cheechoo heard / understood a word and just kinda mumbled something cliche in response... guess his head was in the game

I'm very happy the Caps took Backstrom with the #4 pick in '06, but I wouldn't be too upset if they had taken Kessel. He's got a deadly shot, and just imagine a lineup with Ovi, Semin and him. Opposing goalies would be terrified. Kessel will bag 40 goals in a year before too much longer.

dumb
They played that song between games. And notice that Joe Elliott, singer for Def Leppard, put the Stanley Cup down UPSIDE DOWN! "What do I know, I'm a soccer fan" without a hint of apology. Good call to put a British band on. They should have gotten Rush

I was thrilled when the Pens took Staal over Kessel and Toews. I really think they blew that pick.

I agree with the BPA draft strategy (and I think Backstrom is/will be a better overall player than Kessel), but if there's EVER a time to abandon the BPA philosophy, it's to draft a playmaker when you have a guy like Ovechkin shamefully lined up with a underqualified Zubrus.

I probably should have said I wouldn't be too upset if the Caps got Kessel because Backstrom was already off the board, since I agree that Backs will always be the better player. But Kessel would have been a nice consolation prize. The draft order should have been Johnson, Toews, Backstrom, Kessel, Okposo and Staal around 8th or 9th

Huet gift-wraps a rebound for Redden. Not exactly rooting against him....but yeah, it would be nice to see him not win the Vezina this year or somesuch nonsense.

and then assisted on Brassard's first goal.

edit: Forgot Brassard played last year and scored 1.

I love watching the Oliers in the old school jerseys.

And they score with 5.4 left.

Colorado needs a goalie.

Phoenix is fun to watch. But every save will always hurt.
