A mask is a mask, not like pads. While I've heard this arguement before, it always leave me confused. As long as it's the same make/model...what difference does it make how it's painted?

Hopefully he and Niitty can go 70's retro with their play in net, too, God knows we need a goalie like Bernie more than ever right now.

i'm pretty sure it's been said the new mask is also a new brand.

I have seen that as well about the brand of the mask. I can't wait to see it. I was awaiting his mask when he first joined Philly and I was a bit dissapointed with the one he unveiled at the start of last season...

It's a friggin' lumberjack...if there is one thing Philly isn't synonymous with...it's lumberjacks...at least Nitty chose a Famous Philadelphian Mobster for his mask...

Biron better come up with something classic!

If that's the case, makes sense. Not sure why he would consider a new style mask and not airbrush a maske of the same make/model he wears now...especially considering how much he feels he needs to be comfortable with his equipment

(ie: he wears 12 year old skates for this exact reason)

Maybe not all of them, but BIRON IS ****** NUTS WHEN IT COMES TO HIS GEAR.

Ever see him on Coatsey's corner?

He lays it all out, plays with it, sets it up perfectly, puts it on in this certain order, and does not let anyone disturb him during his ritual.

However, I don't care what he does as long as we win.

We will not see this new mask until he goes really cold or something. Maybe then he will decide he needs a change.

I thought for sure we would see it last month during his particularly crappy games.

Actually, i did see that one, now that you mentioned it. I do recall seeing him last year during playoffs messing with it before the game, had it all spread out in front of him in a specific pattern. ***** crazy.

Biron's retro mask may stay in closet

Like most of us, Flyers goaltender Marty Biron is a creature of habit. He's worn the same hockey skates for the past 12 seasons and the same goalie pants for the past six.

He's got a white Bernie Parent retro mask he would like to unveil this season, but he's hesitant to break it in because he's in the process of changing his leg pads, catching glove and blocker.

Goaltenders have an unusual relationship with their equipment. Some pieces -- like Biron's skates and pants -- are preserved and protected like a favorite childhood blanket. Others are changed as often as a car's oil.

In the case of Biron, he'll typically go through three sets of leg pads, four catching gloves, four blockers, two chest pads and two sets of arm pads in a season.

Right now, Biron is breaking in a new catching glove in practice, while in games he still uses the one that worked so well for him in the playoffs last season.

"Probably in another week or so I'll start using it in games," Biron said.

"In practice I love it. In a game situation, you don't have time to think."

The same goes for Biron's blocker.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this, but Marty is supposedly the 4th best goalie at the moment, according to The Hockey News:

Quote:
4. Martin Biron, Philadelphia Flyers
• Biron has spent some time on the injury list himself this season, but he’s back with a vengeance. During the past three weeks, he’s put doubters to rest with a stat line reading: seven starts, a 5-1-1 record, 1.98 GAA and a .932 save percentage.
Being injured is false, at least that's the first time I hear of it, but he has really come through for us lately after the awful start we had.

Also, a question that is burning in my brain: How would you start the goalies this weekend with back to back games. I think Frank played decent enough today and if he got used to Carolina I would start him in the second game as well and have Marty play against Toronto. With this goalie-fatigue shouldn't really be a factor in back-to-back games.

apparently he had the flu at the start of the season. maybe that's what they're talking about.

My guess, because he's highly fanatical/superstitious about his equipment.

Is he even wearing it in practise?

actually, that routine is pretty much normal for most goalies. We are OCD by nature, some are more talkative than others before games, but we are all OCD about our gear.

Eddy Belfor used to tell ccm how many stitches and where they should be in the leg channel, one stitch off, he sent them back.

Dipietro likes the feel of new pads and goes through many many sets of leg pads per year.

Irbe however used one very very beat up set of koho evolutions his entire career and got them re stuffed from time to time.

Most use different pieces of gear for practice and games. Mainly the glove. A practice glove often has a lot more padding in the palm area than a game glove, which makes it heavier and harder to close, but for practice its safer.

Ladynic over at Hockeybuzz posted a bunch of pictures of Biron wearing the new mask at practice today. They are towards the bottom.
