I guess they had to promise Wheeler a roster spot this year, from what I heard he belongs in the AHL.
I'd like to see him moved before December 1st assuming all the injured guys are back and we don't have any long term injuries. Hopefully by then a team will be in need of a veteran like him and we can get a 5th or 6th for him plus get the salary off the books.
Wheeler actually forced his way on to the team after being arguably the best forward in training camp and pre-season. He was expected to start the year in Providence, which is why management hadn't cleared salary up until now.

In both games against the Bruins he was one of their best players.
I personally would be very surprised if Gainey made any acquisitions at the trade deadline. I think he's got his team and wants to work on chemistry and team pride for the rest of the year, considering it's the 100th anniversary and all eyes are on Montreal. Bringing in anyone from the outside that late in the year could have a lot of adverse effects and if it's me making the decision, I'd want my entire team assembled come day one of the regular season.
I have no problem living or dying by the players on the roster right now. A lot of the time the way a team plays together is more important than how many superstars you have. I think a well managed team with the proper pieces and the will to compete at the highest level and leave everything out on the ice, beats a team full of superstars 8 times out of 10.

Good for Wheeler. Great to hear stories like that.
DAMN YOU GAINEY!!! I WANT MORE SCRUBS BLOOD TO DRIP ON THE FLOOR AND TO FLOW INTO THE DRAIN TO THE AHL!!! /rant over
seriously, I don't care if dandenault got "experience". The guy plays bad and we need to face it. What does it do if a youngster get called in case of injuries?
the only thing it could do is to give him a lust for NHL and force himself to be an even better player...
Look guys, I don't wanna sound over negative but I heard that schaefer was waived by the Boston Bruins today in order to make place for a young player... Boston is showing a team almost free of dead wood while us... Have Dandenault that almost begs to be waived and enough grinders to fill 2 fourth line... What is Bob waiting to waive the guys that do not fit into the team's needs anymore in order to free some more salary cap that could help us into getting a BONAFIDE SUPERSTAR at the trade deadline

Well i want dandy off the team as much as anyone else but as of right now it's not like he's stealing a spot he's fighting for a spot on the 4th line just like others creating competition. Also Gainey is known for respecting players and dealing with players very well and is why he is well respected and perhaps can increase why players sign here in the OS. Gainey im sure will try and trade dandenault but right now he's not really posing a threat.
Here is the "Get rid of Lats and keep MaxPax" mentality again. I think both guys should be here for awhile. It's guys like Dandenault Begin and Kostopoulos that are expendable.

Agreed on all 3 counts, although I'd definitely keep Begin.

If you save that extra 750K now... thats 3.5 million at the trade deadline.... You only need 1/4 of the cap space cause there is only 1/4 of the season left.
What? Salaries are for the entire season. Saving $750,000 now means saving it for the season, and it's not $3.5 million. Pro-rate it if you must, it's $9,176.34 per game, so if there are 25 games left at the deadline, it's only a saving of $228,658! How you get $3.5 million is beyond me... I must not understand you correctly as it makes no sense.

Let's say there are 20 games left at the deadline. Therefore, for the first 62 games, the Habs save about $550,000. That means they can spend an extra $550k for the last 20 games. This is $27,500 per game. A guy making $2.25M per year costs about 27.5k per game.
IOW what Beaker was saying is that for every dollar in salary saved before the deadline, the club can have a short-term rental player worth 3 times as much after the deadline.

Thanks for summing it up.... Thats a nice concise explanation of what i was saying.

The cap is calculated daily, not per-game.

Yes you do.... read.... the cap is calculated daily....
Its how much you have spent up to and including today... plus what is owed to the players on your roster and IR if they were to stay up for the rest of the season.
So if you send a player away now, you can pick up a more expensive one later... cause you will only have to count the salary he recieves after the trade deadline.
The only difference with what IB said and what Baseball coach said... is BC wanted to break the salary down into 82 segments by games.... and IB said that isn't right... you have to break it down by the number of days from the start to the end of the season.

Oh, I knew that, but some other guy put in a figure per game, so I simply used his figure to illustrate the point. Whether it`s days or games, it`s pretty close.

yeah... the important point is that once our defence is healthy the smart move is getting Dandy off of our Payroll ASAP as this will give us more deadline money.
Regardless of whether its by day or game... this is the key.
