I think the 1997-8 Canucks deserve mention based on how much talent they had for a team that finished dead last in their conference: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=548811

The Avs could have been a dynasty between 1996-2001, but horrible amateur at best coaching, and a general lack of caring cost the Avs several championships.

1995-96 Penguins.

Lemieux, Jagr, Francis, Nedved, Zubov, Kasparitis, Murray, Sandstrom and Mironov and they get beat by the third-year Panthers comprised of 17 grinders, a puck bag, and Jovanovski.

Avalanche in 97/98. They had clutch players like Roy, Sakic, Forsberg and Lemieux, but were eliminated by Edmonton in the first round, a team who barely reached the playoff spot and later got smoked by Dallas in the second round.

Aah, payback...

Edmonton did the same thing to Dallas the previous Spring (1997).
