Lehtonen

So I heard Kari might be brought up in early March to get some starts...

If this is the case, that's so cool. I betcha he relishes playing in the best league and stands on his head....Just my opinion though....

Any news on this front...?

I know he's back playing for the Wolves and let in 1 goal in a victory the other night....his numbers have been solid....

I hope they bring him up and he shows our other stiffs how to play in goal.

I do expect him to show up and try and put on a good show to make an early claim on who gets to start in goal next year. DW has hinted that they plan on bringing him up, at this point I don't see too much harm in it.

You can't say that.
Nurminen has played well most nights, didn't he?
But I hope he takes over. I can't wait to see him in action.

Sunday 29th: Wolves vs. Rampage

I saw a Chiago Wolves game Sunday. Kari was looking sharp. It ended 3-3, but two of the goals he was screened (one deflected I think), and the other was just a beautiful power play setup that he had no shot at. There were a couple times he extended post to post robbing a few goals. He didnt get much help in front. Also he stopped (almost completely himself) a 5-3 power play that lasted about a minute. It was at that point in the game where you knew he wasnt letting anything else in.

I heard he also had a concussion recently and hasnt been himself. I think as of this game its safe to say he is getting better.

Also interesting was Jay Bouwmeester suited up (the irony). I guess he got sent down to San Antonio on a conditioning stint (perhaps). There was one play at the end of the 1st period where he exploded through a hole on the blueline, passing everyone on both teams. He had a clear shot at Kari, but got robbed... great save, great breakaway. You can tell Bouwmeester was a man among boys.

Sure I can say that. While Pasi has performed decently this season he is still prone to giving up a soft goal or two every game and was, for the better part of a month, unable to make critical saves. I like Pasi, but for every great save he makes he usually lets in a bad goal too. Dafoe hasn't been much better.

Pasi Nurminen 23-23-5 2.84GAA .902SV
Byron Dafoe 4-11-1 3.14GAA .898SV

Not exactly awe inspiring numbers there.

Goaltending has been a huge weak point on this club since their inception. I'm just tired of watching it. Better to give Lehtonen his chance now to get his feet wet then to wait for next season.

What's the Finnish word for 'no one's saying exactly but it should be soon'?

My guess is this weekend to give Pasi a break. He will probably be up to play at least once a week because we have a back to back every week for the last 4 weeks of the season.

FYI - he is being called up for this weekend.

The Thrashers play Carolina Friday (away) and Washington on Saturday (home).

Lähitulevaisuudessa (in the near future)

or

Kohta (ismilar to soon)

or

Piakkoin (similar to soon)

They're all very vague terms and essential meaning is only known by he who said it.

When I was a kid, we were driving to our cottage and I asked mum "Wehn will get there?"

"Kohta" she replied

an hour later, I asked she said "Kohta" again

an hour later from that I asked "When is Kohta?"

I was just working on typing up my notes from this weekend...I think Lehtonen's stickhandling is very underrated. He cleared the zone many times on his own (high up the middle, scary but effective) on the PK, and made good outlet passes to his defensemen. It will be interesting to see if he's confident enough to do that in the NHL right away.

I expected to see KAri last night as well.

My guess is that BH is wanting KAri to get acclimated to the speed and style of the game first. Also, I think he needs to hang with the guys a bit before being thrown to the wolves.

I watched him warm up and skate around last night and he seemed a bit timid (almost intimidated?). Not unexpected for his first glimpse of the NHL. Within a couple of days he'll be acclimated and should be given a start. I bet next weekend when the Thrashers have a back-to-back. Maybe even this week?

I caught just the end of warmups and I thought he looked great, was only giving posts. Well, that is until Ilya got frustrated with that and decided to deke him. You don't deke your own goaltender in warmups, that's how he caused Dafoe to strain his groin last year. Dumb.

This thing is a complex situation. Like everything I guess.

There's a couple on this page. Also some pictures of another Jokerit guy, Pasi Nurminen.

Went to practice today. Lehtonen looked fine, nothing specatular. Serge Aubin seemed to have his number, oddly.

There was a good goaltending performance at the other end of the rink as it was winding down -- Ilya on his knees in goal against Kozlov's son (who is about 5 or 6). That was just sheer cuteness, there.

Lehtonen will start Friday night at home vs. Florida, so says DW in the AJC. Turner South isn't carrying the game, don't know if Sunshine Network is or not. Either way I'm sure some highlights will be captured at the arena for use by media outlets.

Sunshine will indeed be broadcasting the game. For those of us with Center Ice, Yeah!

Actually, I just checked and I think it is Fox Florida who is, but either way, yes.
