I'll respond to the rest later when I'm not busy grading papers...but this is too good to pass up.

Name me 5 players with Pitkanen's speed, offensive instincts, size, and outlet pass ability.

Has it translated?

Do we really have to dredge this argument as well? We got enough on our hands already and we both know each other's opinions on the Joni situation.

Defensive instinct and ability. The guys I put in bold I would rank below Parent as far as defensive instinct and ability potential.

That's 21 guys off your list.

you said speed, defensive instinct, size and outlet pass ability.

Parent might have some of them in defesnsive ability and instimct, but some who you crossed off have way better speed and passing ability, which should even it out

Not passing ability, outlet pass ability. Parent can make a clean outlet pass unlike a Hatcher or Smith or McLaren or etc.

Also, he does have great speed.

I would not call his speed great, i would call it good to above average. It is not great.

And just so you know Parent is one of my favorite 3 players on the team and I am saying this

Exactly. So the people crossed out shouldn't be on the list. They might be better in offense, but he asked for someone with all three categories in the standard of parent

parent has above average to great speed.

at camp this summer he was continuously the fastest one down the ice and always finished first in skating drills.

ok lets look at it like this on a 1-10 scale

Lets say player X has a 9 speed, 5 defensive instinct, 8 size and 9 outlet pass ability

Player Y has 7 speed, 9 defensive instinct, 7 size and 8 outlet pass ability

well player X has greater speed, size and outlet pass ability but overall, they average out to be the same.

Maybe I should have just stated this more obviously, but name me 60 guys in the NHL with Parents shutdown ability that also have Parent's speed.

So the primary factors here are defensive ability and instincts plus size and speed.

No worries, I don't think he'll ever be a 1st pairing guy like some of us envisioned when we first traded for him, but he has potential to be a very solid No.3 shutdown guy that every great defense needs.

Updates on Randy Jones:

Quote:
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/...ck_sooner.html

The news on fellow defenseman Randy Jones was a pleasant surprise - instead of the 12 to 16 weeks of recovery from extensive right hip surgery yesterday, Jones might beat Parent back into the lineup.

"The doctor got in there and what they thought was a boney issue in the joint apparently wasn't,'' general manager Paul Holmgren said last night.

What that means is that Jones did not have to have part of his hip shaved and will not take as long to recover as originally thought.

"It's really good news,'' Holmgren said.

DENVER - The Flyers received some positive news yesterday: Randy Jones' right-hip injury is not as severe as they had feared. The team said the defenseman would be sidelined for seven to nine weeks instead of the original projection of 12 to 16 weeks.

Jones underwent surgery on Wednesday, and fellow defenseman Ryan Parent had his right shoulder surgically repaired yesterday. Parent will miss 10 weeks, general manager Paul Holmgren said.

Jones' injury "isn't as bad as we first thought," Holmgren said as he watched the team's morning practice. "I'm not a doctor, but the part inside the joint isn't a bony problem - which we thought it was - but a fatty-tissue issue. I guess he has fat hips."

Is this really "good" news? I thought Jones was only going to be out until Thanksgiving or early December? This makes it sound as if he was going to be out as long or longer than Parent, and I'd never read that.

I read that last week, I think it was. They were saying his hip was a lot worse than they expected, with torn ligaments, cartiledge and all that good stuff.

Wow, people must not really read these threads and just jumo in at any point.

First of all this bantering back and forth is really really off topic.

Second, I'll try and clear up this "discussion" surrounding Parent. FH said that Parent was pretty much a sure bet shut down d-man with 2nd pairing abilities TO BE DEVELOPED (note, he was saying that Parent should start on the 3rd pairing and that after about 50 games FH expected Parent to be ready to assume 2nd pairing duties, honestly, this is NOT being overly optimistic). Jester countered basically saying that there are 60 dmen in the league that can do the job better than Parent. WELL HELLO!!! Of course there should be at least 60 dmen in the league who can do it better than Parent, there are 30 teams so there are 60 dmen total on the 1st pairings and nobody said Parent was an elite 1st pairing guy. Hell, even if we said he was only the best #4 dman on any team he'd still only be the 91st best dman in the league. Yes I know there was a "definition" throw out there for the criteria of being better than Parent but that's not what Jester said when he said there were 60 guys who could do Parents job better than him.

Next, since Parent is currently out, you all had damn well better be capable of naming 180 dmen who can do Parents jobs better than he can right now since he CANT do his job at all with just having surgery. I know that's splitting hairs but this "argument" is just as rediculous. Right now, when he's in the lineup, Parent probablt ranks somewhere between #110-#130 for dmen. That puts him currently right around a #4 or #5 dman. Parent SHOULD climb that list fast as he gets more experience and confidence, the only 2 real things keeping him from being up at around #75 on the list right now so lets keep things in perspective. Parent has the raw talent to be a very very good 2nd pairing guy and one who is passable on the top pairing depending upon his partner. This year was suppose to be a huge growing year for him much the way last year was for Richards and Carter. This injury was a serious setback in his developement and most likely retards his grow a full 6 months. Now he most likely won't be ready to anchor the 2nd pairing defensive responsibility until next season. He may HAVE to do it this year but he will be outmatched and not up to the task even at the end of this season.
