Sean Avery

On TSN this morning they did a documentary of Avery on the Stars and demonstrates how he doesn't listen when the coach is talking, stays about 10 feet away from the huddled group of players, all by himself. His captain Morrow has said that he "hates Sean Avery". Avery also showed up to a game in shorts (albeit dress shorts, but shorts nonetheless).

So my question is, since it is becoming exceedingly clear that Avery will not last his full four years (or even this year for that matter) in Dallas, what could the Stars get for him...if anything? The guy is a good hockey player and can throw the other team off their game, but he is an enormeous distraction and in my opinion not worth the trouble.

So let's hear it, what is Avery worth?

Well, what other teams were interested in signing Avery this off-season? That's likely the first place to look. I know he stated he wanted to go to Toronto but they wanted no part of him, so my guess is that his options aren't too vast.

Wow I saw the same thing this morning and I couldn't believe it. I thought it was just a show he puts on whenever he plays. The guy is messed up. What's funny about the Morrow comment is even after he signed to the stars, he's never denied not hating him.

Yep, I heard him say the same thing on 'The Hour' on CBC. I'm glad we didn't sign him after watching that TSN segment.

Heh, Kings wouldn't touch this guy again with a 10 foot pole.

Avery is the total package, and by that I mean a total ass.

I'd still welcome him back with open arms. Atleast its better than signing Shanny.

You may, but the Rangers wouldn't at $4m x 4 years.

I'm surprised that Dallas signed him after their captain stated that he hated him.

If you're already looking to get rid of him one game into his contract, not a whole lot.

I always thought it a bit odd Avery ended up in Dallas. They seem to have a pretty quality organization over there, and I wasn't sure whether Avery could fit into the team dynamic.

Hull mentored & Rommed with Avery on the road during there Redwing Days, Hull was the single reason Avery signed in Dallas, I'm not sure what other teams had offers out there. In the TSN interview Hull said he wanted some one with an edge & "personality" that would shake things up. He sure got one.

One this i'm certain of is that Avery has seemed to turn his antics up a notch or two since he left the Rangers. I think Shanny & Jagr kept him in line to a certain extent.

I think it's up on TSN.ca's video player. I know I saw something Avery related, that's probably what it was.

I was right about to post that. I second that.

Given Brett Hull's comments about bringing in Avery to bring attention to the franchise I wouldn't put it past the Stars that the whole thing was setup to gain publicity.

I'm going ot go ahead and call ******** until I see an article or a link somewhere, I just searched TSN and I see nothing. I know he didn't dress correctly for something (and was fined), but that's about all I've heard.

I'm pretty damn sure that Les Jackson would NEVER let Brett Hull sign a guy just because of the publicity either, they know eachother and Avery is the kind of guy who helps you win in the playoffs, that's why we brought him in.

I'm not a big Avery fan, the difference between him and the guys he tries to emulate(think Owens type NFL player) is that the other guys are superstar players who can change the game all on their own. I think he needs to work on his game instead of working his mouth.

The Daily News had a story about Brown this morning and the story talked a lot about how difficult it was for Brown to be in the NHL at 18 on a team that had mostly older, married guys who apparently didn't do a lot to make him feel comfortable in the NHL as an 18 year old. It's been rumored Brown and Avery didn't get along and here was the one story that was in the paper. I think this is one of the first reasons that has been published, the rest are kind of whispered rumors

Quote:
Sean Avery, known league-wide for his often-caustic personality, made it most uncomfortable. An on-ice collision in Brown's youth left him without a couple front teeth and caused him to speak with a lisp. Avery regularly mocked Brown for it, and Brown sat quietly and further receded into his shell.

"He had it tough," Lombardi said. "I think (leadership potential) was always in him, but there was nothing to draw it out. Actually, there was more to suppress it than draw it out."
http://www.dailynews.com/sports/ci_10694137

After the stories about Avery keep coming, I wouldn't want him in my locker room, especially if I had a young team.

Anyhow, I think Avery's value would depend on if and when Dallas were to get fed up with him. Year 1 in a 4 year contract with a fairly large cap hit for what he can produce, not much. Dallas decides to move him in year 4, probably a lot more.

But, in some funny way, if the Kings go on to develop into a perennial contender as they MAY become with the amount of young talent they are hording, Avery will have had a hand in bringing it about.

Almost single-handedly, Avery brought about the simultaneous removal of Andy Murray and Dave Taylor. While I have a tremendous amount of respect for both Murray and Taylor as people and professionals, the organization just was no longer moving forward under them. It took the poison of Avery blowing up the team to blow up the front office and bring in Lombardi with a new plan.

Whatever his value is, buyer beware.
