Wow this should be a massive event, the government will pour huge amounts of $ into this, and hopefully our soccer will benifit.

A touch concerned though, soccer fans tend to be somewhat of an unruly lot, especially when u consider this is Russia so everybody will be drunk of their ass. Hopefully adequate security measures are taken, or there could be some very ugly situations.

Also lol at Qater, I know they got $ but are you seriously telling me there's nowhere better to hold the world cup?

holding the WC will cost Russia a lot of money though i can understand the choice for Russia, massive country, big population, football is popular there and never hosted it before but Qatar? Very cynical choice by FIFA, tiny country & population, no football-tradition whatsoever....

Sochi has got to be one of the most versatile cities in the world. Summer resort that has the capabilities to host a Winter Olympics.

Winter Olympics in 2014 and WC in 2018.

cska barely goes by PAOK unless Russian teams find the dough to build indoor stadiums and play in winter we are destined to loose clubs on EuroStage just due to not being in shape.

Well that shows you just how strong CSKA are!

I remember when they won Euro Cup they played round of 32's 16's in Krasnodar in front of incredible full stadiums and warmer weather, maybe that's still an option.

But look at Spartak 3-2 away Shakhtar 3-2 away and Kiev 4-1 away if you prepare adequately the "winter break" shouldn't be an excuse.

Now for Zenit they've been terrible in Europe since they won the Cup in 2008 it's time for them to pick it up.

it shouldn't be an excuse - as it is what it is, but you can't deny that the absence of competitive matches puts teams to an extreme disadvantage.

CSKA-PORTO next round should be a classic.

Now Zenit and Spartak must win today.

3/4 plus Kiev. Nice run by Rubin at the beginning...it looked like they were going to go through during the first half. BATE also almost made it in with PSG winning on away goals. Great showing by all our guys.

That said, we HAVE TO fix these conditioning issues. I think the Rubin game showed how much of a liability it is.

Very good times indeed for Russian-Ukrainian club teams. The quality of the teams and the leagues have been improving greatly since about 6-7 years.

It will be tougher in Uklraine but at least the Kharkov's and Dnipro are showing nice things.

But in Russia we can say that the league as never been that competitive since it's beginning. Sure the conditioning thing is rough but Rubin are lacking up front ever since they lost Dominguez-Bukharov and there's no shame in loosing to the current in-form Dutch Champions.

Zenit-Twente I go with Zenit in two tough matches
Ajax-Spartak it's 50/50 both teams have a decent potential but are lacking in many aspects...
CSKA-Porto might be the final before the date...50/50 there also but I go with CSKA
DynamoKiev-ManCity will be VERY exciting matches. Upset is possible.

All around if Shakhtar finish the job those are very good times for Russia-Ukrainian football.
