Kalinin

I see no one has made a little Kalinin appreciation thread for the past few games, but I gotta give this guy some credit. He's playing 3rd pairing defenseman minutes and is probably one of the best 3rd defenseman we have seen in a while. Has a great offensive knack and made some key stops tonight. Definitely a MAJOR upgrade over Malik as some people have called him out to be. I also noticed he played with Girardi a bit, or maybe it was just me?

He did see time with Girardi.

Agreed that he has been solid. Some mistakes here and there, but has made an equal if not greater number of nice plays. He's a very good guy to have on your third pairing.

He's been much better than Malik, he may make a mistake here and there, but he hasn't made any big mistakes that have led to goals and has been solid overall.

I, too, have been very happy with his play after his clearly brutal first game. At the same time though, are we going to have threads for every 3 or so games of good or bad play for each individual player?

Thsi could be a mini-official thread for Kalinin. : )

Agreed 100%. I've been presently surprised so far given the backlash he received from Sabres fans on these boards after we picked him up.

Girardi is his defense partner, so I don't know why that is surprising.

kalinin has pleasantly surprised, as i came in expecting the worst based on what i heard.

if there any question on whether he'd be better than malik, i think these first few games have made a strong case that he was definitely a better option. he's more physical, makes a good outlet pass, and seems to have a decent shot from the point. he's been burned a couple of times, but nothing major.

basically, i'm just glad we haven't had a chance yet to point at him and say "HE is why we lost the game" (granted we can't do that with anyone yet )

We are lucky we have 3 reliable defence pairings. which is 1 -2-3 can vary each game. they all have their ups and downs. good shifts and some gafts.
Kalalin has a top d man as his partner .
I think sometimes though it is hurting Girardi's time more than helping.
Girardi and Staal should be the 2nd pairing and have Kalalin and Mara as the third.
I think Staal would learn more from Girardi and keep developing into a good positional d man.
Mara and Staal are a little wild and lucky out there sometimes.both are great physically but if they were a little smarter would be more effective.
But to keep with the topic . Kalalin is doing just fine and not making any more mistakes than any other d man.
I think the reason that pairings mistakes are noticed more is that they don't make that many and get the puck out well. so when they do it is noticed.
watch all the d. rosie and redden lost the puck a few times a shift last night. as did staal and mara.

How about a team appreciation thread?

Overall the Rangers have been great. There is not one area where I feel we are terrible this year (like I felt about the PP last season). Now, I'm not saying the team can't improve, but overall I've been very pleased with what I've seen in the first 5 games.

The team is fast as hell, gritty, they playmaking has taken unbelievable steps from last season (include the PP in that), the PK is phenominal thus far, **edit** and of course Henky is always doing his share.

Here's to the Rangers keeping it up, and smashing the Penguins everytime we see them this year!

Don't hold your breath hoping his play will last....his whole career he would show periods of stellar play only to totally unravel soon after and be one of the worst d-men around.

Like Voros, Kalinin just needs to keep it simple. The nice thing about having Kalinin (and Redden and Naslund) come to the NYR, is the expectations are much different.

ZING!!

I like how Kalinin jumps into the play. He is also pretty solid in his positioning in the defensive zone. A HUGE upgrade over Malik so far. Sure he's prone to a careless pass or two per game that leads to a scoring chance for the other team, but all defenseman make mistakes here and there.

I lol'd.

I think he's been better than he was in the preseason. Still a few bonehead plays here and there, but it appears that most of our defense is starting to settle in.

The Sabres are my second favorite team in the East and I watch them as often as I can... with that said Kalinin was always an enigma but you can tell he is very talented.

As long as he doesn't have to be play top minutes I think he'll be more than adequate.

the thing with buffalo is that they play a run-and-gun style of hockey....its very entertaining and if they are the faster team they will outscore the opponent, however, with that being said the defenseman often have to stop odd-man rushes and over the course of a season, that gets more and more difficult.....am i saying he was always good in buffalo?....no, im not because i have watched the sabres play the past 2 years when im at school.....however, the rangers system is a much better system for stopping opposing teams than the sabres because the forwards backcheck.....hell, miller is a great goalie IMO and doesnt get enough recognition because of that simple fact....the sabres dont help him out most of the time and he really has to stand on his head in order for them to win a game....multiply that by the fact that he had to play close to 80 games last season because they didnt have a back-up and his numbers are all that more impressive.....

kalinin will be fine....if the forwards keep back-checking and he keeps it simple the guy will be a great addition to this team

When Kalinin is having a good game, he's one of the best players on the ice. When he's having a bad game, he's one of the worst players in the league. Unfortunately, the latter statement outweighs the prior by a LOT.

I do not recommend.
