Lupul to Center tonight against Avs

Didn't see this on the board. On the flyers website there is news that Lupul will be centering the third line with hartnell and Downie on the wings. Metro moves down to the fourth, interesting move..We'll see what happens.

has lupul ever played center? could be an interesting situation if he blossoms here.

strange... not sure what to make of it, but i figured if something like this happened, it would be downie playing center with lups playing RW. guess we'll see how it works--it'd be nice to see him get more involved, both physically and on the score sheet

I could see downie taking some of the draws if Lupul struggles.

But I like teh idea to get Downie in the top-9, get ur most talented players the most ice time and to keep downie from only playong 3 minutes a night

Metro has not played bad IMO, but he has not been great

I think Joffrey is built like a center and has the hands to be one.

I'm thinking Downie was only getting limited time because of his knee. His first game back, he seemed a bit slowish.

Don't know what to think about the change. Weird they're putting Lupul in center and moving Downie to wing, but this just might be the change they need. Stevens finally switched lines last year in the playoffs and it paid off. Edit: I'm also thinking that the ice positioning might actually help Lupul pick corners on the net better. He has such a great shot, maybe this will help him get a couple more goals.

Lupul to Center?????

Gagne-Richards-Briere
Upshall-Carter-Knuble
Hartnell-Lupul-Downie
Cote-Metropolit-Asham

Interesting experiment. Keep expectations in check though, the winger to center transition is much harder then center to winger. Centers have to be better defensively while the wingers lock down the point. All of a sudden your defending against another forward rather then defending against a d-man. Thats a big change.

Let's hope he can do it. I still think I'd prefer

Gagne-Richards-Lupul/Briere
Hartnell/Upshall-Carter-Briere/Lupul
Upshall/Hartnell-Downie-Knuble
Cote-Metropolit-Asham

I don't know when Lupul has ever taken faceoffs, so I think Downie might still take the faceoffs and switch positions. Keith Tkachuk is someone who has done something like this throughout his career.

Yeah I just do not get it, he can't have played C competitively for at least 5 years and you can't just magically switch back to that.

Plus I think Lupul is a more effective winger anyways.

EDIT: This is just Stevens' continued (moronic) refusal to get Knuble off Carter's wing.

I continue to assume Downie will end up between Hartnell/Lupul.

I don't think he would now. The reason he can't center the third line is because he doesn't have the conditioning or skating ability to cover so much of the ice for that amount of ice-time, especially going up against better lines.

in all honesty though, if stevens doesn't want that line out against the likes of sakic, hejduk, stasny, etc, he won't. richie or carter's lines will be out there, leaving downie, lupul and hartnell to work against third or forth lines.

in that situation, i think downie will be servicable...

Knuble needs to be traded or put on 3rd line duties. Knuble and Carter together is one of the worst combos on the team.

I agree whole heartedly.

He's not built for this team, we don't need him. Not as top 6 anyways. Too slow, no mojo.

Against Pittsburgh Flyers won 20 something face offs..

I've really do not get Stevens, break up 1st line or play RW at center... Interesting

Is this what they call thinking outside the box?

Besides faceoffs, Lupul was playing like a center in the first game from what I saw. He was assisting in battles everywhere, his own zone included, leading rushes...I mean, in that first period where we got blasted for 4 he seemed like the only guy there, he really took charge of that line. I like the move.

I can see what he means about Lupul and his open ice ability. Someone else mentioned Downies coverage and conditioning shortcomings and I agree with this also. Seems a little outside the box, but maybe pretty simple at the same time. Hope it works.
