I don't think a lot of people realize just how tough it is to score 30, regardless of how good someone is. Blue liners just don't put up those numbers anymore, and even then, very few in NHL history have been that good at scoring goals. He would have to score 12 goals more than he did last year to reach that feat, an incredible 67% increase in goal totals for the guy who lead the league. It just is not going to happen.

To put that kind of improvement into perspective, Ovechkin would have to pot 109 goals this season to match that. Both players are the same age; both lead the league in goal scoring at their respective positions last season. Sure, Green is off to a great start this year, but let's be reasonable.

So even though he already has 4 in 5 games, he'll only score 11 in the remaining 77? In the Caps' system? Ok.

I think he'll get 25-30 but I wouldn't be surprised if he got 30+.

Indeed, right before defences started improving the year after, and scoring dropped significantly.

Green is the most likely D-man to do it, but even 25 goals would be a monumental achievement for a D-man in this day and age.

IIRC, He scored just 1 goal in the first 21 games under Hanlon where he played 3rd pairing minutes ~12min a game. Under Boudreau he scored 17 in 61 games, which is ~23 goal pace.

Even so, 23 goals is very different from 30 goals. And he has yet to prove whether or not he can sustain the 23-goal-pace over a whole season. Green is one of the most talented young defensemen in the league, but I don't think he is 30-goal good, especially in today's game. And that isn't a knock on him whatsoever. Some of the best defensemen to ever play the game haven't had a whiff of 30 goals before.

I think most who've seen him play think it's possible.

In the same way that Ovy scoring 60 was possible.

I think he'll break 25...which is still a ridiculous season for a D-man.

Yes Green can score 30 goals and he will (I've been saying that since the end of last year).

I knew Mike Green was good last season but having watch 4 caps games this season he is a sick defensemen. He is by far the best offensive defensemen today and he's one of the leagues top skaters as well. I wouldn't be surprised if he scored 30 goals this season, but I'd say more like 20-25 goals for sure. He's a future Norris winner, and the Caps are lucky to have him to go along with there collection of young skilled players.

Is there something particularily amazing about it? A lot of forwards score 30 goals, or even more!

I thought Norris trophies were awarded for defensemen

I keep seeing this misconception. While Green is not a stalwart in his own end yet he is not a liability either. He's 23 and not finished developing yet. He's playing over 26 min a game in all situations and has been even or better each game.

but when people talk about awarding Norris's...I think they should go to the best defenseman, in the same vein I dont think that Phaneuf should be legitimately considered for it either

I would pick Vlasic over either of these 2 gentlemen

Revisiting this poll...

While it's nearly impossible for Green to score 30 now, if he hadn't missed those 13 games he would have made a run for it. He now has 15 goals in his 38th game which projects to 32 over a full season. It would have been close.

Vlasic is underrated...but you have to consider offensive ability in Norris voting.

Is the Norris overly-dependent on offensive stats? Yes.

Should they disregard offensive stats completely? No!

I think he'll need a hat trick to get it done. He hasn't been big on multi-goal games, he'll need at least one more to make it close.

Want to say yes, but I doubt it. The Caps have too much firepower for Greener to continue this streak. A bit ago it was OV scoring the goals, now it's Green (and apparently Fehr), next week it could be Semin and Fleischmann. Next year I don't think there's any doubt that he gets there.
