Sean Avery might be the most overrated, over hyped player in the league today.

From what I can tell, he's a 35-45 point player who'll draw a few penalties, but somehow, he's turned that into a 4 million dollar a year contract and regular Sportscenter spots... I don't get it. For some reason, he seems to think he's an all-star...

When you can completely neutralize a player by simply ignoring him, he's not all that good. Look at what Buffalo and Pittsburgh did to him the last two playoffs. Just don't pay attention to the guy (which isn't all that hard to do) and he becomes your average 3rd liner.

You look at a guy like Claude Lemieux, and he was a valuable player. He was a huge d*ck on the ice, but also managed to win Stanley Cups and a Conn Smythe trophy. That's a valuable pest.

When Sean Avery helps his team win a cup, then he can act like he's all that. Until then, he's nothing but a cockier Trent Hunter.

I was thinking it was the mocking of his (Browns') choice to marry early in life.

He is a cocky *******, but stating that he is overpaid is funny considering there are far worse forwards making much more than they are worth. Nearly everyone signed to a contract in the last 2 years are overpaid, lol.

It's impressive,
for the amount of hatred he gets,
he still gets all these spots on TV shows,
he still gets a new thread every week on HF, one of the most talked about players
... I think he knows what he is doing, he is good for the game.

I don't hate Avery but I can see why so many people do. Avery has found a niche' for himself, somthing so many players in The Pros try to accompish. He looked a little lost out there tonight, & he had nothing but nice things to say about the orginization, inculding he hopes to come back & play for the Rangers someday.

Hes the best pest on the ice...you HATE playing against him but love him on your team. Loved him on the Rangers...the second they showed footage of him trying to stir crap up with Lundqvist....i hated him, and now will always.

Its his game...i respect that totally, he does a great job. But like i said, i hate him now.

Seriously Drury is a better hockey player than Avery. Avery is good at being Avery, but your argument here is quite silly. Those numbers will vary greatly by the end of the year.
Actually I found tonight that Avery looked like quite the twit trying to use his antics on his old team who knew he was going to do it. Not that interesting when you know what he is going to do, it's getting old now.

Hopefully this is the right thread:

I wonder if Sean Avery isn't the TO of the NHL. The NHL needs players like Avery to even things out with all the quiet good guys in the sport. As for what he did with Broudor and the whole waving the stick, yeah that's probably fueling the hate but is that really a bad thing?

If by special you mean conducive to being a jerk to basically everyone and being, as it seems, quite egotistical, than sure

In my opinion he hasn't really done anything that bad. Claude Lemieux was hated for his brutal cheapshot on Kris Draper. Ulf Samualsson was hated for ending Neely's career. Gary Suter was hated for his crosscheck on Paul Kariya. Todd Bertuzzi was hated for punch to the back of Steve Moore's head. Sean Avery is hated for a few dives, and blocking Brodeur's vision with his hands? What am I missing? I know he has been in a few fights, but there is seriously no dirt on this guy but everybody hates him.

So why does he get all this hate when he hasn't done anything really that terrible at all?
In terms of being a bad guy Avery is nothing compared to these guys. People hate Avery because he's one of those people you love to hate as long as he isn't on your team.

He's incredibly effective. He's creative with his ways of causing havoc and he faces the music.

Steve Moore, Claude Lemieux and Ulf Samualsson were known to never face the music. (Well Samualsoon and Lemieux did at the end of their careers, but it was hardly justice for all the times they tried to take someone out with a cheap hit.)
