Bryan McCabe was 2nd, Brad Richards I think was 3rd, and guess who was 1st? I'll give you a hint. His initials are S.A. and he can't fight himself out of a wet paper bag. Enough said, I think the players in the NHL "might" have a bit of insight
a smarter person would realize that those who voted are the same people who have to hear Avery opinions about their families on a regular basis, so they may not the most unbiased sample.

and equating overated to "doesnt bring anything valuable to the table" is beyond ridiculous.

I wouldnt, this was done in the Spring of 2007. Not sure what changes have been made since then but Avery still isnt a superstar in this league. Just dont tell him that

So these same guys voted for Brad Richards too. You know, a Lady Byng winner, who can go several games without a penalty. Richards does not ruffle anyone's feathers and he was still voted up there. I'm going to trust that the players know a thing or two about Avery. Of course I guess his track record of changing teams as often as socks has nothing to do with it.........

4 teams. Detroit signed him as an undrafted rookie for a year. traded him to LA in a package. Then later traded to NY several years later, then signed a contract a year and a half later. He definitely changes his teams alot. He's like a mini Mike Sillinger

Those of you who thinks Avery brings something positive to the game are out of your minds. I watch hockey for the hockey; I couldn't care less if a player is no good in interviews so long as he dazzles on the ice. If you want to see stupid sideshow antics, maybe you're better off watching the WWE or something.

From what I can tell, he's a 35-45 point player who'll draw a few penalties, but somehow, he's turned that into a 4 million dollar a year contract and regular Sportscenter spots... I don't get it. For some reason, he seems to think he's an all-star...

When you can completely neutralize a player by simply ignoring him, he's not all that good. Look at what Buffalo and Pittsburgh did to him the last two playoffs. Just don't pay attention to the guy (which isn't all that hard to do) and he becomes your average 3rd liner.

You look at a guy like Claude Lemieux, and he was a valuable player. He was a huge d*ck on the ice, but also managed to win Stanley Cups and a Conn Smythe trophy. That's a valuable pest.

When Sean Avery helps his team win a cup, then he can act like he's all that. Until then, he's nothing but a cockier Trent Hunter.
Great points. Dustin Brown will have 6 games to steamroll him this year and he has 6 more versus Pronger and Ducks. Dallas is not
exactly off to a great start with him either.

If one more person tries to liken the team blowing to having Avery there, I swear it will be confirmed that HF is made up of idiots, lol.

Avery doesn't play defense or goal and those are the two biggest areas that are lapsing for us right now.

Did Avery crumble in a heap the way Brodeur would have if there was minimal contact?

Hey, Who can blame the refs for swallowing their whistles when it comes to Avery?

Because clearing the crease always involves a stick to the back of the neck.

It's not like he tomahawk chopped him in the back of the neck

He was pushing him in the back with his blocker

Still looks like a blocker to the top of the back..

Don't you think something would have been done if Marty was deliberately chopping Avery in the back of the neck?

Brodeur gets called out for letting Avery run his crease in the playoffs and then people cry when he defends his area

Marty will protect his house

That is clearly not a blocker to the back, and they are not in the crease, so apparently the Mr. Doughnut needs to lose some weight because he his house has gotten a bit bigger.

Once again, if it was clearly not a blocker to the back and Marty was deliberately chopping Avery in the back of the neck, why wouldn't the ref atleast say something to Brodeur?

Nice try.. Your 'Mr.Doughnut' is in great shape following a rigorous off season with his new personal trainer

His weight really slowed down his play over the years right?

i've been playing and watching hockey for close to 18 years now and i like having a guy like avery in the league.

he's a jerk. everyone hates him.
don't you think the opponent is amped when they hit the ice to play a guy like him?
of course.

whenever i played an opposing team with someone like avery on it, i couldn't wait to play a shift against their line.
not only did i want to score against them, i wanted to lay him out, chase him down into one of the corners and bury him.

as far as the dustin brown thing goes..
wah wah.
everyone is saying "oh a veteran should've spoke up and stopped him".
why didn't brown?
because he is shy?
that's lame.
this is the nhl, not house league.

hockey isn't a gentle sport.
..although the league sure as hell is making it that way.

His teammates have a strong dislike for him too. Bertuzzi etc were all somewhat respected avery's just a jerk on and off the ice.

I don't get how Avery is hated more than Ruutu. At least Avery doesn't go for players knees and tries to cheapshot players.

Apparently NHL players dont follow the rule of sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me. Averys known more for running his mouth than throwing cheap shots. Im not going to deny hes had some bad hits but a majority of players that play physical do. But in the end its his yapping that earns him the hate.
