OT - Game getting soft?

A few years back Bob Gainey had registered his frustration with the way that NHLers can seemingly no longer dish out legitimate, legal, big hits w/out someone - ANYONE - then jumping them to start a scrap.

Obviously, there's reason for this frontier justice when no regard is shown for safety (like with a head shot), or to a degree when it's a china doll marquee player who's hit that no one wants touched. But it seems as though any solid hit is near inevitably always responded to with a teammate coming to the players' "aid". A fair example was seen when Ohlund was hit by MacIntyre on Saturday night.

Is it just me (and Bob), or does anyone else observe this as a change to the game?

And now Gainey wants to limit/remove shot blocking from the game. UHHHH

Thats funny. I said the exact same thing to my friend while watching the game on Saturday.

The play should have just continued, no fight, the hit was clean. If these players don't want to get hit then don't play in the NHL, they can always see if a woman's team can take them.

Also Hemmer takes lots of hits and gets back up and keeps on playing.

I think this fits in here, so I'll post here rather than start a thread. Watching this year, it's unreal how many hooking calls there are, as well as some interference calls. I'm not necessarily talking about the Oiler games, but just in general... I just think its a bit much, and there is a lot less flow to the game, and for me it's taking away from the enjoyment as a fan. They've got to ease up a bit. Not to the point where it was pre-lockout, clutch and grab style, but you still have to let the guys play. That's just my take on things.

I totally agree. I hate when there is a good flow to a game with back and forth action and a ref fells the need to break it up with a BS call. Unless it is really blatant, just ket the game flow.

Marc Crawford: "that's what good teammates do"

Bertuzzi was a great teammate
