An early look back - 2008 NHL Entry Draft

I realize it's really early still, but let's have some fun. Based on how things have gone so far, would you change the order/ranking of picks in the last entry draft?

Here's how it went down.

1/ Steven Stamkos
2/ Drew Doughty
3/ Zach Bogosian
4/ Alex Pietrangelo
5/ Luke Schenn
6/ Nikita Filatov
7/ Colin Wilson
8/ Mikkel Boedker
9/ Josh Bailey
10/ Cody Hodgson

Stamkos wouldn't be number 1

Holy early Batman. I don't think we've seen enough to even guess.

Well, clearly the winner is Detroit, with whomever they drafted in the 5th, 6th or 7th round.

1) Schenn

Love,
Leafs Hype Machine

Seriously though, it's way, way too early.

This seems as good a thread as any to ask, but how have each of the defensemen that have made it to the NHL that were drafted last year look? I know there are a bunch. Sbisa, Schenn, Doughty, Pietrangelo, etc. I don't have the time or ability to watch all of them to form my own opinion. Who has looked the strongest? Who the weakest?

I'm a Leafs fan and watch Schenn every game so here's my take on him:

- Averages more icetime than any other rookie
- Plays in key moments every game
- He sticks up for teammates (fought Neil Saturday)
- Was told he had very little shot at making Leafs, needing a miracle and that miracle seems to have happened
- Always faces teams top lines (Crosby/Malkin, Alfy/Heatley, etc.)
- No points as of yet but is a defensive defencemen and has a hard slap shot
- Useless stat but is a minus 3.
- Probably most consistent defencemen on the Leafs roster and improving each game

Overall I am very surprised at his play. I thought he would go back to the juniors for sure and here he is.

To bad a Montreal fan can't admit that as we speak, Mr. Schenn is the best.

Filatov would probably go top three.

Here's my stab in the dark.

So I see Schenn and Filatov making the biggest moves up due to more evidence around their potential as NHL stars. For Schenn it's been his performance; for Filatov it's just the fact that he's here.

1/ Steven Stamkos
2/ Drew Doughty
3/ Luke Schenn
4/ Nikita Filatov
5/ The rest....

Sbisa was just a flat out steal. This is my list as of now.

1/ Stamkos
2/ Doughty
3/ Schenn
4/ Filatov
5/ Sbisa
6/ Boedker
7/ Bogosian
8/ Pieterangelo

Pieterangelo may end up climbing the list, but from what Ive seen he looks lost at times where as the guys above him havnt been. He also needs to be physical which he hasnt been at all.

I don't know if he's better than Schenn because I haven't seen him, but Doughty has been unbelievable. Better than the Johnsons last year IMO.

funnily enough the Wings 6th round pick was Steven Johnston, who's tearing it up in the OHL for Belleville at the moment...

but, it's WAY to early to judge at the moment

He's currently third behind Doughty and Sbisa.

The Detroit Red Wings were right — Stephen Johnston's nine-point rookie campaign didn't even scratch the surface of his potential.

The 18-year-old center has already matched his 56-game rookie output after 11 contests as a sophomore with the Ontario Hockey League's Belleville Bulls, with three goals and six assists in the young season.

Johnston, who the Red Wings took a flyer on in the sixth round (181st overall) in June's draft, had a pair of three-point games this week and has recovered from a sluggish start to post eight points in six games.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder is compared by the Red Wings to former prospect Shawn Matthias. He had two goals and seven assists last year in a fourth-line role on a deep, veteran team that made it to the Memorial Cup.
He added another goal and two assists in his next two games.
