Best video game soundtrack?

For me it has to be gta: Vice City...I'd drive around just listening to the music a lot of times.

Others : Diablo, final fantasy series, zelda

Original soundtrack? Plenty of great ones out there, I don't think I'll ever get sick of the music from Skies of Arcadia or most Zelda games. Really, almost anything by Nintendo is enjoyable.

Licensed? Jet Grind Radio and JSRF are my front-runners.

Don't know why you would consider licensed music. It takes FAR more talent to create a good original music as opposed to buying other people's music. Even then, licensed soundtracks are more likely to cater to a more narrow taste in music. It's easier for an original soundtrack to be universally acclaimed than it is for modern pop music that you hear on the radio. To me, a licensed soundtrack doesn't deserve to be recognized as exemplary.

For an OST, BioShock, Arcanum, and the Metal Gear series comes to mind. Final Fantasy VII and VIII had fantastic ones as well

I only count original sound tracks. RA 1 and C&C are up there for me. As is Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask, Fallout 1, Diablo 1, Wave Race.

Actraiser and Super Castlevania 4 (SNES) are always the first that spring to mind.

For me, BioShock and JSRF. BioShock's soundtrack fit in perfectly, and JSRF is catchy and awesome.

Chrono Cross is very very underrated.

Any of the FF Series.

I also really liked Wild Arms 1 OST

FF Tactics is my favorite however.

I don't know about FFVII because I never played it, but VIII's soundtrack was great.

I'm going to nominate Stubbs the Zombie.

All modern covers, by great indie and alternative artists, of classic oldies from the 50s and 60s. Commissioned especially for this game.

I really love some of the tracks on this soundtrack. Especially Cake's cover of "Strangers in the Night" and Oranger's cover of "Mr. Sandman."

hahaha, I have that. Never played the game, but the music is great. Death Cab covering Earth Angel, The Ravonettes covering My Boyfriend's Back, and, of course, The Flaming Lips covering If I Only Had a Brain.

Chrono Trigger or Xenogears probably.

Does Rock Band or Guitar Hero count?

Most of the stuff from JSR was actually done in house, so it's sort of half and half.

Still though it's near the top of my list. Others include...

Chrono Cross
Earthbound
Mario Galaxy

Hate to double post, but this is totally true. VIII's is arguably better than VII's.

Then again, best FF soundtrack could very well merit its own thread.

The Halo games and World of Wacraft soundtracks are good enough to listen to in my Ipod. Diablo's Tristram track gets an honorable mention.
