I'm a big fan of the "classic" Black Isle, Bioware etc. RPGs so I'll vote for Jeremy Soule's music. Always did a great job of capturing the spirit of the games and the locations therein.

Icewind Dale Main Theme:

Icewind Dale, "Kuldahar":

"The Old Republic" from Knights of the Old Republic:

"The Sith" also from KotOR:

Morrowind Main Theme:

And a couple from Planescape: Torment. "Annah's Theme" by Mark Morgan and the credits music by Richard Band:

The original Tenchu: Stealth Assassins for Playstation had great music (as well as hilarious voice acting). My favourites were the cultist level and Minister Kataoka's level.

And yeah, of the recent FF games, FFVII has my favourite soundtrack, followed by FFVIII. I have the FFXII soundtrack as well and it's not nearly as good... the music in that game was much more ambient I think, there aren't nearly as many memorable themes.

For me it's easily Final Fantasy X. Simply amazing.

I've got two that I love

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

and GTA: Vice City

NOTHING beats running over pedestrians while blasting some "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight".

Yeah, Vice is definitely my favourite of all the GTA soundtracks.

The talk shows were actually funny, and the music stations, specifically Wildstyle, Espantoso and Fever were great.

I started re-playing that game on the Virtual Console last night.

Amazing how well that game holds up, 10 years later. Including the music. I've had the music in my head all day as I've been working.

I own most of the Final Fantasy sound tracks, including piano tracks.

They should redo all the tracks on Final Fantasy VI. Melodically, an amazing soundtrack.

Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger and some of the others mentioned already are great.

My favourite though is Metal Gear. It's hard to pick one game because all of them have some good musical pieces. Metal Gear 4 is in my head because it's recent:

And of course

I agree, and was such an awesome game too.

My favorite of all time is Mega Man 3, especially the intro music.

Then of course, all the RPG's I think everyone else covered. I'll throw Persona 3 in there, I liked that a lot.

Some honorable mentions: F-Zero, Super Metroid, Okami, Shadow of the Colossus.

I don't know. Those tracks with vocals were pretty hard to stomach, especially since you mostly just got to hear the first 20 seconds most times. How many times can I hear "Two dancers, gonna put you in a trance, rock that body, rock that body, make sure you don't hurt nobody. Say hey, hey hey" without losing my mind?

The fact that no one mentioned the Sonic games is exasperating. The music in all of those games is soooo good. I sometimes just hum them in my car.

I'm a pretty big fan of all the music in Blizzard games, it's just great stuff. I was also a huge fan of the music in Space Channel 5 and Jet Set Radio!

But my favorite video game song ever is the "Lon Lon Ranch" song in Ocarina of Time. That song is just amazing.

Good call. I forgot about F-Zero, but it had pretty good music. I remember playing that game a ton when it came out on SNES.

I think F-Zero is one of those hibernating franchises that Nintendo needs to revive (along with Kid Icarus). I know they already have a big racing franchise in Mario Kart, but F-Zero was a different kind of racing game. As of now, the only acknowledgment of F-Zero is the inclusion of a few characters in Smash Bros.

I'd love to see a new F-Zero game on Wii.

Ace Combat games always have good music. Not the best by any means, but the series deserves recognition.

So you actually like the Knuckles raps from SA2? And as far as OoT goes, nothing can touch the theme of Hyrule Field.

Yeah man what's wrong with them. For a video game it's pretty top notch stuff. If you ever go to OC Remix and listen to the Sonic remixes you'll put them on your iPod. They are great.

Hyrule field.... ppffftttt. Lon Lon or bust, even the Gorgon City and Shadow Temple music is better than Hyrule field imo. I really hate the Fire Temple music... ugg terrible.

The Genesis era Sonic stuff was great. The later stuff, not so much.

And there is indeed some great stuff to be found on OCRemix

Almost forgot, this track from RE2 still gives me goosebumps and made me nervous playing the game as a child.
