Good point. I never really paid attention to the lyrics, actually. Maybe I should put Persona 3 into more of an 'original' category for soundtrack. Well, original for me, anyway.

Interstate 76 for me is far and away the best original music ever done in a video game..

Try it, you might like it..

The list begins and ends with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and San Andreas. Nothing else comes close.

That's funny, there are 75-odd posts before yours that seem to disagree.

And let's be honest, a great original soundtrack beats a bunch of licensed stuff any day.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

Some of those PSP Grand Theft Auto games have some sick soundtracks too.

Absolutely yes. When I hear Terra's Theme, I'm instantly 12 years old again, playing Final Fantasy VI in my room. When I hear Running Down A Dream, I don't really go "Man.... San Andreas... wow."

Exactly.

Although I do think the placement and structure of the GTA games licensed music merits praise. They didn't just randomly pick a bunch of songs they liked, they all fit pretty well.

Personally, I thought Vice City's soundtrack was better. The opera station in GTA III was epic, though.

I'm going old school and citing Star Control II. It was one of the first games to emphasize the sound track for computer games in my mind.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Control_II

Quote:
The soundtrack of the PC version was high-quality — the contents were determined by running a contest which anybody could participate in, composing tracks based on a description of the game. Included on the soundtrack were compositions of Aaron Grier, Erol Otus, Eric E. Berge, Riku Nuottajärvi and Dan Nicholson, the president and founding member of The Kosmic Free Music Foundation. Music was in MOD format which uses digitized instrument samples while most of PC game music still relied on FM-synthesis based instruments at the time

Fallout 1, 2 and my GOD, Planescape:Torment...Deionarra's music...great ****.

Mark Morgan is/was a genius. Not sure if he is still composing for games and TV. He was one of the few minimalistic/avant garde composers during that era and will always remain one of my favorites. Something so...insane about his stuff. The minimalistic direction fit so well in the depressing as all hell world of Planescape. Sigil and Deionarra were great. They are on Youtube along with the whole Fallout 1 and 2 OST.

Every time I hear a piece from PS:T or Fallout 1/2, i load up Guitar Pro and Nuendo and other sampling software and just try to come up with something like that... I always fail but the music inspires me so much just because of how... Beautiful and simple they are. Much like the Requiem for a Dream OST and most things Clint Mansell composes. If i recall most of Requiem for a Dream was 4 to 8 notes just a descending minor scale...

Other then that there's Baldur's Gate. Some of the best. Classical/folk one minute then booming epic orchestra that puts all to shame the next. Hoenig really made a OST for the ages there. Then theres Mega Man. The neoclasical/thrash influences in there are cool. Phoenix Wright has wonderful music as well.

Someone mentioned Arcanum. One of the most beautiful all string orchestra. Anyone that can write stuff like that I just tip my hat to. I remember when that came out most reviewers were essentially boggled to why this masterpiece of composition was in a 'video game'. The basis of it is so amazing also - the game is all about magic vs. technology so the score is Medieval/Renaissance themed pieces performed by a Victorian era string set... The dichotomy is so perfect. Total conflict which fits the story...It's **** like that which makes it great.

And to not be some old guy who reminisces about the days when companies actually cared about music and **** I'll throw in a more recent game - Mass Effect. The use of the thermin, vocoder, Moog and other various digital and analog synths fit so...great. As someone who loves synth work i thought the runs and patches fit the game so perfectly. It REALLY fit the whole 1970s era sci fi TV show setting that they were going for.

'Life in Mines' was awesome back in the day. I used to hum the ocarina/flute melody all the time. That and 'Dire Dire Docks' from SMB64.

One thing that I love about those songs - the way the drumming changes the entire sound scape of the song. Both 'Dire Dire Docks' and 'Life in Mines' start out very somber, and keep the same somber melody throughout it all, but when the drums kick in it gets uplifting and moving. I just love how various different drumming rhythms change any type of riff to something total opposite. How we perceive various accents and rhythms as sad or happy.

Life in Mines is an absolute master piece, it's one of the best video game songs of all-time, simply amazing.

Some more great songs from various games:

Super Mario RPG - Forest Maze
- This has a weird feeling to it, it's cartoony yet at the same time it has somewhat of an eastern ethnic sense to it.

Super Mario RPG - Final Boss

Super Mario RPG - Culex Battle
- I believe this theme was copied from Final Fantasy.

Shadowrun
- I remember this game had horrible graphics, was was fun to play, and the soundtrack was dark and techy, defiantly a good one.

Song good Street Fighter themes:

Donkey Kong Country 2 themes:

Killer Instinct (These more polished than the SNES version but this is from the actual soundtrack I think).

I'm convinced that old school game music is much better than modern game music, can someone tell me a modern game with a good soundtrack? I can only think of Oblivion, and even that's not great.
