Not good value for Ottawa since Backstrom is scheduled to be an UFA. They also would need a top-6 forward in return. The Sens also aren't rebuilding (not yet anyway), and this trade wouldn't really help them today as their offense would be pretty offensive.

Columbus doesn't give up enough in the trade. They get the best player in the trade (Spezza) for Filatov and a first-round pick. They would need to include a young player like Brassard in the trade and maybe something else.

Minnesota does o.k., dealing Backstrom and a first-round pick for Filatov, although the Wild probably should get a 3rd-round pick in return.

I wouldn't trade Brassard for Spezza straight up at this point. Brassard looks like the real deal already.

You do know Filatov is 18 right? And he was the 6th pick in the draft? We will add Tollefson, if you want.

But Spezza is the real deal. There's no risk there

i like it. we could then trade heatley for 2 more 1sts, alfie for a 1st, phillips for a 1st, vermette for a 1st.

i think if we accumulate at least 10 1st round picks in '09, we might be in a position to win the cup in '10.

Do you think dealing Filatov and a 2009 1st-round pick is enough to land Spezza? That would be a steal of a deal for Columbus, and even one BJ fan thinks so.

Columbus ends up getting Spezza (signed until the middle of the decade) for a first and one of their top prospects? That'd be the steal of the century, not withstanding the fact that Ottawa gets royally screwed with their return for Spezza (an incoming UFA and a two firsts) and Minnesota could most likely get more for Backstrom than by giving up a first round pick to get Filatov. Besides the fact they would be without picks in the first three rounds and have a bare cupboard prospects-wise (even with the hypothetical addition of Filatov), it doesn't seem like a move that would be in their best interest.

wait a sec...Minnesota is supposed to give up Backstrom and a first for filatov? really? Didn't the Jackets send him down? Why would we want to give up a first rnd pick along with one of the hottest goalies in the league (who has also remained consistent his entire stint in the NHL thusfar) for a former first round pick who apparently isn't ready for the NHL yet. I know he's young, but we're thinking playoffs again and this would just shoot us in the head. Backs UFA status and the fact that Harding is ready to be a number one make this tempting, but...no thanks.

We give up Backstrom and a 1st??

Backstrom is a damn good goalie, hes been great and consistent his whole stint with us so far. its iffy giving up just him for Filatov. The only thing that makes it A LITTLE reasonable is Backstroms contract status.

I wouldn't be that down on Filatov; he just got drafted this year. He still has high value and will most likely be an amazing player someday.

But yeah, Minnesota gets shafted the most here regardless.

The way Columbus is playing that 1st could end up being John Tavares

To say the least, the OP must have forgot to include Leclaire to Minny. In fact, why is Minnesota even in this conversation??!!

Start with Leclaire and Filatov for Spezza, and Ottawa still should ask for more.
