I love what this does for negotiations with the Sedins. If Alfredsson, who obviously wants to stay (like the Sedins do), is making 5.5 a year, how can they ask for more than that?

Thanks Ottawa! Congrats, as well. Love DA.

Because they won't be 40 in the last year of their deal?

Mats Sundin would have been 40 in the last year of the contract the Canucks offered him. Vancouver actually has cap space. That hurts them more than anything else when negotiating with the Sedins.

The Canadian dollar is not going to be continuously as strong as it recently has been relative to the US dollar.

Melnyk's not dumb. He front loaded Heatley's and Spezza's contracts as well.

You haven't take a look at the exchange rate recently, haven't you?

We all want an Alfie kind of guy in our team. I hope Saku sign a similar deal

Yeah but at his age there is a risk that he will slow down or get injured a lot.

Just looking at his current ability, it's a bargain though.

That's a lot but it makes sence that he makes more the first year, since he will be pretty old (even for Alfie) at the end of the contract.

The Sens stockpiled enough American money to last the franchise for ~2 years when the exchange rate was at its best.

Very Kaberle-ish of Alfredsson.

Well recent history has shown that injury really hasn't stopped him. After getting obliterated by Bell he came back a few weeks later (although not healed) and played for the team. At the start of this year he hadn't missed a bit, and only missed 1 game after arthroscopic knee surgery. Obviously his ability to absorb these kind of injuries won't last forever, but he's certainly very healthy right now.

I had a lot of respect for Alfie before but this really shows how much of a team guy he really is.

Depends on your definition of hurt. The Sedins need a team that has cap space for the package deal so if it is in Vancouver's best interest to keep them then the cap space helps.

I seem to be alone in wondering why people think that this is Alfredsson giving the Senators a bargain. He's getting a ton of money up front and next year he won't be better than this year.

That is probably the best contract in the NHL right now. Sheesh, what a bargain.

Out of curiosity, what would qualify as a bargain then?

What are other 90 point 2-way forwards making? Other than Zetterberg, of course

Leaving the Leafs/Sens equation out of it, if Alfie at $5.5M / year isn't a bargain, how much is Sundin worth in your eyes?

Always nice to see a guy take a resonable contract to stay with his team.

He's a great captain, and any team would love to have him. He's an absolute steal at this price, and truly put the team ahead of himself. I really hope all the flak about him being captain starts to fizzle out sometime in the near future. If not, at least reference this as a devil's advocate.

I don't get the part about having signing bonuses each year. Why?

Alfredsson has a beautiful signature and his autographs are worth a lot of money and sentimental value.

This is just a guess, but I think bonuses are advantageous for players in that they get their money sooner, and can therefore invest it sooner, instead of getting it piecemeal.

A million dollars on January first is worth more than a million dollars over the course of 12 months, if invested correctly.

It might also have something to do with how the CBA dictates how much a player's salary can go down each year.

EDIT: RTWAP on the Sens board points out an article by Eric Duhatschek that explains in greater detail the salary structure. Apparently the "buy-out bonus" from the previous contract doesn't count against the cap, which makes the cap hit $4.875M!
