Seriously Gaborik should go to Russia, we don't need players like him.

Leaving the Leafs/Sens equation out of it, if Alfie at $5.5M / year isn't a bargain, how much is Sundin worth in your eyes?
Last year Sundin got $5.5 million, Sakic is making $6 million as another comparison since he is close in age but probably gets more for Cups. That's what the market is like if you take Vancouver's desperate offer out of the equation.

This contract is a joke, nothing but a joke!

We will have to protect this guy all year, and it's nothing but a joke!

This year the Leafs were offering Sundin $7M. As good as Sundin is, Alfie gets more points, plays in more situations, and is younger. Besides, I think everyone agreed that Sundin's $5.5M was actually a bargain last year as well.

With all that said, it turns out Alfie's cap his is only going to be $4.875 per, less than Kubina and only $125k more than Kristian Huselius. There are dozens of examples of lesser players making a ton more money over the next few years.

As a Leafs fan, I despise Alfredsson with a passion, but I do have to respect him on how much of a cut he's taking. That's what the NHL needs more of these days...I mean how many of these players are actually worth 7 mill+...not as many as the number that are making it right now, thats for sure.

So... are you trying to say the contract is a joke? Or no?

Editted: Missed the joke.

I'm guessing he will play at least until his mid 50's. Way to go Alfie.

About time Leafs recalled Bell.

Great deal btw. But I could see this coming. Alfie have been saying he feels more Canadian then Swedish, that he would rather win the cup then Olympic gold and this have all been said to the Swedish press so I cant imagine what he is saying to the Canadian press. I like him but again, lets recall Bell

I am fully aware of the exchange rate, thanks.

Even 83 cents is good. You obviously weren't watching hockey when Canadian teams were getting 65 cents on the dollar paying US salaries.

Am I the only one that doesn't understand this....wasn't he set to be paid $3.8 million for each of the next 3 years with a cap hit of just over $4.3 million. Now he is going to make a total of $21.6 million over the next four years for a cap hit of $5.4 million. Am I missing something???

There was a three year conditional option. Both the team and Alfie decided they wouldn't use it, so they negotiated a new contract.

ok, but why would the Sens do this if they had an option....or was it Alfredsson's decision alone? I could understand it if it was between the 3.8 and 4.3 a season (so alffy makes more money and the teams cap hit is lowered). But both are higher, and there is no way that 4th year is worth this much.

Also, does anyone know what effects this has on the salary cap...was his cap hit not lowered for the past 3 years due to the 3 year option? I know option years are no longer allowed, but it still seems like a major flaw in the CBA.

If Alfie played 70 games and/or got 70 points this year, he could walk. Not saying he would have, but it could have put the Sens in a tough position if other GM's started throwing offers his way once he hit those marks.

Out of respect, I'd assume. Alfredsson is and has been the heart and soul of this team over a decade. Rather than using the option (if it is the team's to use), they preferred to just give him a new contract. Potentially a bad decision financially speaking, but Alfie deserves it.

It's cool to see this deal get done. Nice to see a guy play his whole career with one team. I think it's a pretty fair deal and not really a big hometown discount. He's a PPG guy who's 36. At 39 & 40, that cap hit isn't going to look so good, but they're paying him for past service IMO. Works well for both sides NOW. Hopefully he continues to produce throughout the entire contract.

A well deserved and classy move by a player I have come to hate less and less (he grew on me greatly by single-handedly keeping the Sens in against the Ducks). He's made his commitment to winning in Ottawa, now it's up to the rest of that team to do the same.

Although 3 years from now it could look good if the cap grows a little each year.

Ah, I was wondering what that was that all about. I was thinking when I saw this signing, "didn't he have 3 years left on his previous contract?"

EASILY $7million on the open market....if Sundin can get 10mill....i'd be willing to wager that Alfie would be offered that too
