GDT: Flyers At Red Wings, 7:00

As far as Detroit general manager Ken Holland is concerned, when a team has a chance to get a player as good as Robert Lang, it should do so with no questions asked.

Lang, second in the NHL in scoring, will make his debut with the Red Wings when they take on the visiting Philadelphia Flyers in a matchup of two of the best teams in the league.

After spending nearly two disappointing seasons in Washington, Lang was dealt to the Red Wings on Friday for prospect Tomas Fleischmann and two draft choices. The 33-year-old center went from being out of the playoff race to having a chance to win his first Stanley Cup ring.

"He's a guy we've had our eye on for a long time," Holland said. "We're happy to be able to bring him here."

Lang, who has 29 goals and is one point behind Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis for the NHL lead with 74, practiced with his new teammates for the first time Saturday.

Not only will he have to get accustomed to playing important games every time he takes the ice, Lang will have to learn a new system - one that has helped Detroit to the top of the Central Division.

"It'll definitely take a little time to get used to," Lang said. "It's a puck possession team with guys moving and going all over the place. And defensively, they use the left-side lock. ... But with the caliber of player here, it won't be that hard."

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Lang skated in practice on a line with captain Steve Yzerman and Ray Whitney.

"He's a big forward who can play," Yzerman said. "Big isn't any good if you can't play. He's bigger than I thought he was."

Lang joins Detroit's other centers Kris Draper, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg - who can play any forward position - in a system that gives coach Dave Lewis plenty of flexibility.

"It opens up a lot of options," Lewis said. "But you have to get a feel now. For everything, not just the lines."

The Wings, who have won seven of 10, ended a two-game slide (0-1-1) with a 2-1 victory in Calgary on Thursday.

The Flyers welcomed goaltender Robert Esche back from injury Saturday, but lost 3-2 in overtime at Boston. Esche made 29 saves in his first start since Feb. 2 after missing 10 games due to a sprained left knee.

"Two weeks from now he probably would have had the third goal," Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock said. "For the first game back after missing a month, he was fine."

The Flyers have lost four of their last seven (2-3-1-1), but are tied with Ottawa for the most points in the NHL

-AP

I like the Flyers in this matchup. You can bet that the team is not happy with their result in Boston and with their play in Ottawa and that they want to make a statement in this game. I also don't like Detroit's goaltending that much and I think that our forwards can beat them in the corners and create some good chances. This is my first thread like this, so I'm betting it's good luck.

Flyers 3 (Gagne, Recchi, LeClair)
Detroit 2 (Lang, Hull)

Flyers - 4
Wings - 2

I think that the Flyers will come out charged up and play strong beginning to end. we need a strong 60 minutes tonight and hopefully, Burke will have another strong game.

this will be Lang's first game as a Wing so he should be pumped. let's hope that he doesn't do any serious damage on the ice.

Doesn't Therien play well against Lang, I think he's on of these "Jagr" guys that Therien eats alive.

Lang is a good player, don't get me wrong, but everyone on HF is talking about Lang like he's an elite player or something. He is a good player having a very good year, but I'm much more worried about guys like Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, etc. than I am about controlling Robert Lang.

If only Therien could eat everyone alive, we'd have our very own fatbastard, errr, elite defensemen

I havent followed Detroit, or much of the western conference for that matter, all season. I have no clue how the Wings are really doing, but I look at these factors: Sean Burke at an advantage because he actually played the Wings more than once a season. But then look at the fact that we're playing back to back road games, third in four days against an upper-crust team, in a place where we havent won since 1988. This one could get Ugly, but prove me wrong

Flyers 1
Wings 4

I completely agree. I'm not going to predict the Flyers to win in Detroit until they do it. 2 years ago the Flyers led 1-0 with less than a minute left and lost the game 2-1 in regulation.

Detroit 3 (Hull, Datsyuk, Lang)
Flyers 1 (Gagne)

Robert Lang has been in the top 3 in points for most of the season. He could potentially be the first player ever to win the Art Ross trophy and have played for 2 different teams.

Not that great of a goal to give up there. It seems like Burke saw it coming

Yep, Flyers need to get better on draws too. They give up too many scoring chances off them.

PP is looking hideous. lol Flyers keeping getting favorable offside calls.

Refs better not decide this game.

Sure he's a very good player, but I've heard some people talking about how this makes Detroit better than Colorado. Lang isn't going to make or break the Red Wings, or any playoff team for that matter, IMO.

well anytime you add the leagues 2nd leading scorer to your team, especially a team as stacked as Detroit, it's going to make a big difference. he will only be better playing with the type of caliber players that the Wings can put on the ice.
