Coles notes...

We played much like we did the first four games rather than the previous four. Hemsky made Coburn look foolish twice, while the team left Gaston all by his lonesome. Downie played just 6 minutes, took a costly penatly and was subsequently benched...while Alberts (as Dig mentioned) Jones'd a shot from the point which led to a penalty...and well...the rest is history.

Worst part, we don't play until Thursday. Maybe that's a good thing. With this team, who knows.

Why does Kukkonen sit while Alberts continues to play?

Same reason as why Kukkonen sat while Modry continued to play.

And Jager, I love the pictures, thanks for posting them. I swear, I will never tire of seeing that "C" on Richie's chest.

Is that the reason why, Downie is benched and Ross plays in the last few minutes of the 3rd period.

After seeing the scoresheet and reading just a little about the game, I think I'm glad I missed this one. I love watching Edmonton play, but thank God we don't play them often.

I have no problem with Ross playing. In fact, he put in a ton more effort in one of his shifts than Downie did all game.

I'm starting to believe that Downie is going to be a borderline player at best. I realize the coaching situation is really screwing with him, which obviously lends itself to the situation, but he hasn't done much else to show me that he can play through it. He was one of the many that looked flat out lazy on the ice today.

As I've kept saying, Kukkonen needs to be traded. It's not that he's bad (or worse than...anyone else at times), it's that the team refuses to use him. If there is a player on your roster that you don't feel comfortable using then he shouldn't be on the team.

So that was you....

Were you like up behind the penalty boxes in the 200 level during the game?

Yeah, pretty much. Unless you have a better reason.

I'm all for rewarding hard work, but then the game is on the line...you play your best players.

Downie had one shift in the third. That's all I will say.

Downie really needs to stop getting ****ing slashing penalties though.

Downie has about the same number of PIM in his career so far as Gagne has since the lockout.

I dont care about penalties, and I love Downie, but Slashing penalties are awful. I would rather tripping/hooking/interference. Hes gotta learn that hes not going to get away with slashing. (I didnt see the game today, but I assume the penalty was warrented?)

BUT it seems ever time Steve takes a penalty we give up a goal at an awful time.

I'm all for sending him back to the Phantoms.

Oh come on. Gagne is one of the most gentlemanly players I've ever seen. You know Downie isn't a soft player and he tends to drop the gloves. PIMs rack up fast for different players...

That's my point. It's not his fault, it's just unfortunate everytime he's in the box they allow a goal. It could happen to anyone. It just adds fuel to Stevens fire (and the clever folks here at HFBoards...).

It's not like he's in the box mind-controlling the puck into our net. He takes a penalty now and then like everybody else. Not a big deal unless you don't like the guy.

I dont remember if they scored when he was in the box today, but either way I just hate slashing penalties

They're weak calls though, based a lot on reputation. He's walking on eggshells out there.

And yes, they did score while he was in the box. But how is that his fault? We had to kill 6 penalties and allowed a goal on one of them. What does that have to do with Downie? It's luck of the draw. And it's not like we're talking about the last 5 minutes of the third period. It was the second period. It happens. You move on and try to get it back.

I've never seen another player get bashed on these boards for being in the box while a goal was scored - and it indeed happens to everyone.

Saw the highlights, those two Hemsky goals were bad on Coburns part. Carter had another nice goal though.

Is it Steve's fault the team gives up a goal while he is in the Box? No!

Is it Steve's fault his penalty’s often come at the worst possible times? Yes!

Are some of the calls against him wrong? Sure the refs are never 100% right. Problem is the kids now got a rap sheet. Like some of the signatures say "Downie did it" is on the Refs minds for sure.

Bottom line is most of us like this Kid. However the way the game is played now your not about to see him transformed into the 2nd coming of Rick Tocchet.

Send him down and let him grow up a little.

Again we let a team that played the day before walk all over us. The Oil looked like they were the ones that just had a few days rest, not us.

And did Coburn like, forget how to play defense today? That was horrible. Coburn was a -3, Timonen a -4.
