Goalies....

Just wondering what your thoughts are with the problems, Colorado and to a lessor extent Ottawa are having in goal and Brodeur and possibly Dipietro injured for awhile....

Do you think guys like Khabby, Gerber & Roloson would clear waivers now or might it be a good time for a team to throw them up and see if they can rid the contract and existing tension at the position??

I'd almost think with the three guys above just getting rid of them might be an improvement to the team that loses them if for nothing else then to rid themselves of the lockerroom tension. If any of hte teams try to hold off for a return, I think there's enouph sellers that they won't get much back anyway.

I'd rather keep Manny right now and keep building up his value...I've been saying for a while we should do what the Habs did with Huet/Price. Trade off Manny or Thomas at the deadline (probably Manny) and bring up Rask to get some games.

well, i guess lou said he wont be trading for a goalie anytime soon, but that could really change 2-3 weeks from now if weekes/clemmensson isnt getting it done. Depending upon how desparate lou is and how much he is willing to give up, i could see him going for any one of Roloson, Backstrom, Khabibulin, Legace, Mason, Gerber, Fernandez, or Pavelec.

For players like khabibulin, fernandez, gerber, and rollie, the devs would still have to dump salary, unless brodeur goes in IR to make room for them, but then the devs could be in a fix when he is healthy again.

Backstrom and pavelec would be the more expensive options. Backstrom would probably cost more than lou is willing to give, but pavelec could be interesting because it gives the devils a possible "goalie of the future".

So basically if New Jersey wants to be in the playoffs they are going to have to make a trade for a goalie.

I'd say most possible trading partners would be these teams who are looking to trade off one of them goalies.

Boston - Manny Fernandez ( 4.333 cap hit & UFA at the end of the year )
Chicago - Khabibulin ( 6.750 cap hit & UFA at the end of the year )
Edmonton - Roloson ( 3.667 cap hit & UFA at the end of the year )
Montreal - Halak ( 0.775 cap hit but still has another year then is a RFA )
Ottawa - Gerber ( 3.700 cap hit & UFA at the end of the year )
Philadelphia - Niittymaki ( 1.225 cap hit & UFA at the end of the year )

I believe if any goalie is traded for it will be one of these.
Some may say that NJ wouldn't trade with Boston, Montreal, Ottawa or Philly but with a tandem of Weekes and Clemmenson I think they are gonna be pretty desperate to make a trade plus it's not like one of these goalies being traded to NJ is going to come back and haunt the former team. All the teams are looking to get rid of these goalies besides Montreal looking to get something valuable for Halak.

New Jersey is not interested in trading for your garbage goalie.

Sigh....

Roloson is way better than Weekes or Clemmenson.
Roloson has actually been playing pretty solid thus far, check the stats.

Besides Rolly has the lowest cap hit of all the possible goalies and NJ doesn't have much wiggle room.

Also a smart guy stated that..

"A season is considered 187 days. I saw somewhere that stated Brodeur could be back February. He'll be on LTIR from let's say today until February 12. 100 days.

So $5.2M into 100 days of a 187 day season would allow the Devils to go over the cap by $2.78M.

The Devils only have about $500K in cap space at this time. They could just squeeze Roli in given the above parameters.

And hey, this means they couldn't possible fit Khabibulin in easily! That cap hit of $6.75M is very harsh. "

What are you basing this statement on?

How is Rolosson "way better" then Kevin Weekes?

Great quote with the goalies available and I believe New Jesery will need to make a deal for one of the following. There best bets would be Fernandez, Gerber or Roloson considering they are both UFA's and cap hits of 3-4 million

NJ is better off trying to get Halak or Pavelec as potential #1's after Marty B hang's em up. To learn from Brodeur during his last few years before they take over wouldn't be a bad idea. Do the Devils have any solid goaltender prospects?

Colorado's main issue right now is the defense playing like crap, Budaj hasn't been spectacular, but Roy wouldn't be looking as outstanding as he is with the way the defense is playing right now

How many teams has Weekes led to the SCF?
Roloson has been very good in the last 20 or so games he has played for the Oilers.

NJ has NO quality G prospects. Pavlec would be a good pickup, but would Lou give up what's needed?

The Hawks would probably need something in return for Khabby at the moment.

Being an Avs fan, I would take Roloson, he has put together some good games this year, plus he is a step up from what we have. I'll give Arnason, and 2nd for Roloson.

Roloson with how he was playing last year couldn't have gotten us a 7th round pick.
He's really stepped up this year and has played great, I'm sure he could bring in a 3rd round pick. I'm fine with the tandem of Garon and Roloson plus rolli is a ufa at the end of the year and a 3M cap hit isn't that bad when you look at some other backup goalies in the league. I would like to trade off Rolli to let him get a fresh new start and help out a team as he is a class guy and the Oilers have three goalies anyways.
